Challenge
Every summer, Wimbledon operates under match-point pressure: thousands of games, millions of fan interactions, and a global audience demanding instant access to insights, stories and analysis from one of the world’s most-watched sporting events.
The challenge isn’t simply keeping up with fan expectations. It’s maintaining a consistent public face while, behind the scenes, modernizing a complex digital ecosystem.
Most enterprises inherit infrastructure that was never designed for the demands now placed on it—and the burden grows heavier every year. The question Wimbledon faced is the same one confronting organizations across every industry: how do you build for the future without compromising what defines you?
The stakes
In tennis, hesitation can cost a point. In business, it can cost momentum.
Without immersive, responsive experiences, even iconic brands risk losing engagement with younger and digital-native audiences. But Wimbledon’s leadership understood that the stakes extended well beyond fans. Players, members, ticket holders, broadcasters and tournament staff all depend on reliable digital services.
The organization didn’t just need a technology upgrade—it needed an architecture capable of serving its diverse audience and stakeholders and evolving continuously with changing expectations. It called on a trusted partner to build the foundation that could handle whatever comes next.

Our relationship with IBM is extremely collaborative. Any digital project requires a technology team, a data team, a marketing team and a content team working closely together. IBM is the glue that makes that happen for us. ”
The game plan
IBM helped Wimbledon pursue two objectives simultaneously: create richer experiences for every stakeholder, and update the digital foundation powering these experiences. The approach reflects how IBM builds a smarter business—by synchronizing a redesign around comprehensive data management, hybrid cloud infrastructure, advanced AI and automated IT operations.
Using the IBM watsonx® platform, Wimbledon introduced AI-powered capabilities including Match Chat, Likelihood to Win and Key Moments. These tools turn live match data into timely insights, helping fans understand and engage more deeply with the action unfolding on the court.
Behind the scenes, IBM reimagined content operations and redesigned digital architecture to modernize infrastructure, reduce technical debt and create new value from digital assets. For example, more than 15,000 digital assets were migrated into a modern application in less than an hour using the IBM Bob™ platform, helping accelerate workflows while retaining the value embedded in decades of content.
The most important outcome wasn’t a single feature. It was a stronger foundation built to identify value generated from data assets before, during and after each year’s tournament.
IBM is helping Wimbledon establish an AI operating model that can support future innovation, governance and investment decisions. In addition to advancing the technology stack, new capabilities can open up opportunities that deliver value in the years ahead.
Wimbledon has spent nearly 150 years building one of sport’s most enduring institutions. By combining fan-facing innovation with deep operational modernization, the organization continues to expand its global reach, strengthening every stakeholder relationship and creating a digital foundation that can support the next generation of tennis.
What people see through the app and onscreen is only the visible layer of a much larger transformation that can help reshape how one of the world’s most iconic sporting events operates, innovates and grows. That’s not just modernization. That’s a winning strategy worthy of any industry.
On fight night, timing, precision, and performance decide everything—not just for the fighters. UFC applies the same game plan to live broadcast. With IBM, the organization trained AI to deliver real‑time insight for every bout, elevating analysis on MMA’s biggest stage. What can golf teach you about AI?
By combining proprietary historical data with the latest agentic AI, the Masters and IBM have developed a stellar digital fan experience. But it’s more than a sports story. It’s a showcase of what’s possible when innovation pairs with purpose. A digital platform that shows organizations how to apply AI in ways that matter to them. How to use what’s uniquely theirs to drive deeper connections, build lasting loyalty and deliver performance.
