How can we build an inclusive future for all in a world that has become politically, economically and socially fragmented? At the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) 48th annual meeting, leaders from all walks of life should expect an atmosphere of global co-design, co-creation and collaboration in the effort to answer that question.
IBM Chairman, President, and CEO, Ginni Rometty will co-chair the event with six other distinguished women leaders. They will share the stage with event chair Professor Klaus Schwab, WEF founder and executive chairman, in Davos, Switzerland, at one of the largest conferences of leaders in the world.
Rometty will outline IBM’s commitment to data responsibility and the belief that organizations that collect, store, manage or process data have an obligation to handle it responsibly. As she states in the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting blog:
“…we mustn’t confuse data with wisdom. Expert understanding of processes, industries and fields of knowledge is required to make sense of the data that matters for business and society.

Living in a data-driven world means there’s more risk than ever that personal information will be stolen, that bad actors will use this data to target individuals for crimes or false news. In 2017, the challenges of the data economy – from mass data breaches to the intentional manipulation of online platforms – captured global attention and raised questions about how we can tap the full benefits of this new world while limiting the risks.
That can only happen through a broad commitment to responsibility by all of us… Responsibility also means being transparent about data practices. We must be clear about who owns data and the unique insights it generates. Companies must be clear with their customers, and governments with their citizens, when they ask them to give up ownership of their data.”
