Wimbledon 2019 is powered by IBM

This summer IBM has been the official supplier of Information Technology and consultancy to the All England Club and The Championships, Wimbledon for 30 years. At IBM, we are extremely proud that it is our technology and expertise that helps Wimbledon in their pursuit of greatness to deliver a top-class sports event with outstanding quality in every aspect year after year.

One may wonder why it is so important for Wimbledon to have a strong partnership with IBM in order to benefit as much as possible from technology at The Championships? Among other things, this is because innovative and high-quality content is crucial for Wimbledon in order to keep their position as the world’s most prestigious and well-known tennis event. Whether at sight, on-the-go or from their homes, fans from all over the world following The Championships expect exciting updates, news and highlights delivered fast and accurate throughout the tournament. To make sure that this is working out smoothly is one of the key components of the partnership between IBM and Wimbledon.

Content creation with AI

IBM is helping Wimbledon’s digital presence by analyzing millions of data points, video material and thousands of pages of unstructured text with Artificial Intelligence to deliver content across all of their media platforms. A few key results from the collaboration last year was:

In 2018, we enhanced the AI-powered automated video highlights for Wimbledon fans. IBM Watson was taught to better recognize player emotion, increasing the quality of the output and enabling the web-team of Wimbledon to produce a highlights package in just 5 minutes.
