Suspending a logical partition

You can suspend a logical partition by using the Hardware Management Console (HMC) after the logical partition is created.

Ensure that the logical partition is in the running state. The logical partition must also be capable of suspension.

The Suspend/Resume feature for logical partitions is supported on POWER8® processor-based servers when the firmware is at level FW840, or later.

The HMC Classic interface is not supported in Hardware Management Console (HMC) Version 8.7.0, or later. The functions that were previously available in the HMC Classic interface are now available in the HMC Enhanced+ interface.

For more information about enabling the suspension capability of a logical partition when the HMC is at version 8.7.0, or later, see Changing partition properties and capabilities.

When suspending a logical partition, the HMC stores the data about the switching mode in the reserved storage device that was used to store the configuration data.

To suspend a logical partition after the creation of the logical partition by using the HMC, follow these steps:

  1. In the navigation pane, open General and click Partition Properties.
  2. Select the logical partition in the work pane.
  3. From the Tasks menu, click Operations > Suspend Operations > Suspend.
  4. Click Suspend.

The suspend operation fails if the partition that you want to suspend has virtual storage adapters that are hosted by Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) logical partitions with versions earlier than 2.2.1.4. VIOS logical partitions with versions earlier than 2.2.1.4 are not capable of protecting the virtual storage devices of the suspended partition from accidental reassignment while the partition is suspended. To protect the virtual storage devices of the suspended partition, all VIOS partitions that are hosting the devices must be capable of reporting virtual storage device usage of suspended partitions. You can suspend a partition that is hosted by a VIOS with a version earlier than 2.2.1.4 by using the chlparstate command, and with the protectstorage option set to a value of 2, by using the HMC. When you use the chlparstate command to suspend a partition, you must ensure the integrity of the storage devices of the partition while the partition is suspended.
