Creating a logical partition with the simplified remote restart or remote restart capability

You can create an AIX®, IBM® i, or Linux logical partition with the partition remote restart capability or the simplified version of the remote restart capability by using the Hardware Management Console (HMC). The HMC provides options to enable the remote restart of the logical partition when the logical partition is created.

On POWER7® processor-based servers, the remote restart capability must be specified during partition creation and cannot be changed later. On POWER8® processor-based servers, and when the HMC is at Version 8.1.0, or later, you can change the remote restart capability after the partition is created by using the chsyscfg command. On POWER8 processor-based servers, when the HMC is at Version 8.2.0, or later, and when the server supports the simplified version of the remote restart feature, you can change the simplified version of the remote restart capability after the partition is created by using the chsyscfg command.

Prerequisites and assumptions

Ensure that the following prerequisite steps are completed before you start the configuration steps:

Configuration steps

Ensure that all the prerequisites are completed before you complete these steps.

To create a new logical partition with the remote restart capability or the simplified version of the remote restart capability on your server by using the HMC, complete the following steps:

  1. In the navigation pane, open Systems Management and click Servers.
  2. In the work pane, select the managed system, click Tasks > Configuration > Create Partition. Select the partition type as AIX, IBM i, or Linux.
  3. Select one of the following options:
    • Allow this partition to be remote restartable check box to create a partition with the remote restart capability.

When the server supports only the remote restart capability, the Allow this partition to be remote restartable check box is displayed.

    • Allow this partition to be remote restartable (Simplified) check box to create a partition with the simplified version of the remote restart capability.

When the server supports the simplified version of the remote restart capability and the remote restart capability, only the Allow this partition to be remote restartable (Simplified) check box is displayed even though the server supports the remote restart capability. In this scenario, if you want to create a logical partition with the remote restart capability, you can run the mksyscfg command from the HMC command line.

  4. Follow the steps in the Create Logical Partition wizard to create a logical partition with the remote restart capability.

The HMC Classic interface is not supported in Hardware Management Console (HMC) Version 8.7.0, or later. The functions that were previously available in the HMC Classic interface are now available in the HMC Enhanced+ interface.

When the Hardware Management Console (HMC) is at version 8.7.0, or later, only the simplified version of the remote restart capability is supported on the logical partition when you are using the graphical user interface. You can create a partition with the simplified version of the remote restart capability by using a template that supports the capability when you create a partition by using the Create a Partition from Template wizard. When the template does not support the capability, you can enable the capability by modifying the template and then using the modified template to create a partition by using the Create a Partition from Template wizard. For more information about editing a partition template, see Changing a partition template. For more information about enabling the simplified version of the remote restart feature after you create the logical partition, see Changing partition properties and capabilities.
