Troubleshooting


Problem

User runs a standard report (also known as 'system report'). User receives an error.

Symptom

IBM Cognos software
QE-DEF-0288
Unable to find the data source 'sqlncli.1:servername:databasename:sqllogin' in the content store.

Cause

There are several possible causes for this error:

  • Scenario #1 (most likely) - I.T. administrator has created a new 'database connection' but has forgotten to press the 'Repair' button (inside Controller Configuration) to create the required data source
  • Scenario #2 - Database connection settings contain too many characters (string is too long)

  • Scenario #3 - Known limitation (APAR PM80822) of Controller when using DB2 and manually specifying the TCP port
  • Scenario #4 - Cognos BI permissions are too restrictive on the data source, so that the user cannot utilise it.

Resolving The Problem

Fix:

Scenario #1
Click the 'Repair' button (inside Controller Configuration) to create the required data source.

    TIP:
    • For Controller 10.1 onwards, you need to click the green "tick" (check) box to make the 'Repair' button appear.

Scenario #2
Modify the 'Database connection' settings to reduce the number characters (for example shorten the database or server name etc.)

Scenario #3

Manually rename the data source inside Cognos Connection.

  • For more details, see separate IBM Technote #1616157.

Scenario #4

Give the relevant Controller user group (by default this is called "Controller Users") Read, Execute and Traverse permissions.

Workaround (for scenarios #1, #2, #3):
Manually create the missing data source inside Cognos Connection.
