StorM allows you to extend existing clusters or build new clusters by purchasing additional IBM Storage Ceph Ready Nodes hardware for IBM Storage Ceph systems.
Minimum Hardware architecture
4 (*) bare metal nodes minimum to support Block and Object protocols
gateway servers can be virtualized
storage managers and monitors (OSD and MON/MGR) are collocated
Supported CPU architecture: x86_64
It is recommended to use at least one node more than the number of data redundancy slices. Thus Replica 3 deploys on 3 nodes minimum, but 4 or more are recommended. EC4+2 deploys on 6 nodes minimum, but 7 or more are recommended, etc. This is due to Ceph's self-healing / data redistribution mechanism after temporary node outages. Below the recommended minimum, performance impact from self-healing will be significant.
StorM defaults to the smallest recommended node count that fulfils the given capacity requirements. If the node count is manually decreased below the recommended minimum, there will be a warning.
Small capacity clusters: Generally prefer building these with more nodes, but smaller drives (or drive slots left empty), rather than configuring fewer nodes with highest capacity. The only way to seriously break Ceph is a lack of nodes & capacity during partial outages.
