Understanding IBM COS in Storage Modeller
IBM COS is a collection of appliances which entails:
▪Manager: Sets up how the systems communicate with each other
▪Slicestor: Where the physical disk drives are located
▪Accesser: Communicates with the Slicestor on behalf of customers that use that storage
Data is divided up in the memory space of the Accesser and distributed simultaneously across all the Slicestor drives in your cloud environment. Based on the requirements of your
Information Dispersal Algorithm (IDA), the Accesser receives acknowledgment when enough of the designated Slicestor systems have received and written the data to ensure reliability,
performance and capacity. This functions in a manner that is similar to how RAID functions.
The Manager, Slicestor, and the Accesser are physical boxes. Some models of the Slicestor allow you to virtualize the Accesser. In that case, the Slicestor takes on the additional role of
Accesser and runs that role in the memory space of its physical hardware.
