Total Cost of Ownership for Linux in the Enterprise
Published July 2002 by the Robert Frances Group, this 8-page paper discusses the results of evaluating Linux deployments in the enterprise for mid- to large-sized companies.An east coast telco wanted to implement a Linux solution to support 250 customers who required new servers. Each customer would need three servers to support the solution: an application server, a network server, and a DNS server. They had to choose between a solution that used stand alone servers, or they could opt to upgrade a G5 that was installed at the telco to support the 750 Linux servers that were required. A consultant was called in to determine the best solution, and to implement it. After implementation, the same consultant was engaged to produce white papers describing the process that led to choosing the solution, and the technical considerations of the implementation.
Three white papers in the Linux for S/390 series were produced:
- Scalability and Competitive Advantage - an executive management overview will take you, and your executive level customer, through a high level look at Linux, the S/390, and the total cost of ownership work performed which led to the selection of the S/390 as the platform of choice. - Technical Solutions for Competitive Advantage - a technical overview provides the technical manager with an overview of the technical considerations, and some unique aspects of Linux on S/390. (G326-4010-00)
- Technical Notes on a Large Scale Implementation - a technical brief for the solution implementer describes work done on the now famous "Test Plan Charlie" where 41,000+ Linux instances were run in a logical partition of a S/390 G5. (G326-4011-00)
