Troubleshooting


Problem

This document provides instructions for getting to suggested server firmware levels and HMC levels (on applicable systems) taking into consideration the existing levels on POWER5 systems.

IBM Server Firmware and HMC Code Wizard

Select your system to start the Server Firmware and HMC Code Wizard for your IBM POWER5 system:

To determine the model of your systems, on the operating system command line type the following:

Model 595:

HMC code level?

What is the current version and release level of the HMC?

To determine the current HMC version, it depends upon which version is currently loaded on the HMC. At Version 7, from the HMC, open HMC management, and hover over the HMC version to display the version and release.

For all other versions, from the HMC or a WebSM session, use the following steps to determine the release of HMC code:

1. Open Licensed Internal Code Maintenance.

2. Open HMC Code Updates.

3. Scroll down to the bottom where it shows the version and release level.

Version 8 and later

Model 595 > HMC > Version 8 and later:

HMC Version 8 and later is not supported on POWER5 systems.

For HMC and firmware information, refer to the Fix Level Recommendation Tool or Fix Central.

Version 7 and earlier

Model 595 > HMC > Version 7 and earlier

For HMC and firmware information, refer to the Fix Level Recommendation Tool or Fix Central.

What is the current version and release level of the HMC?

Determining the HMC version depends upon which version is currently loaded on the HMC.

At version 7, from the HMC, open HMC management, hover over the HMC version to display the version and release.

For all other versions, from the HMC or a WebSM session, use the following steps to determine the release of HMC code:

1 Open Licensed Internal Code Maintenance.

2 Open HMC Code Updates.

3 Scroll down to the bottom where it shows the version and release level.

Version 8 and later

Model 570, 550, or 520 > HMC > Version 8 and later:

HMC Version 8 and later is not supported on POWER5 systems.

For HMC and firmware information, refer to the Fix Level Recommendation Tool or Fix Central.

Version 7 and earlier

Model 570, 550, or 520 -> HMC -> Version 7 and earlier

Update policy?

Is the server firmware update policy set to HMC- or Operating System-managed?

Use flashlevels from the Service Partition or the following steps from the HMC to determine the update policy:

1 Open Systems Management, Open Servers.

2 Select the desired server in the check box.

3 Select the Tasks drop-down box, Expand Operations, Select Advanced System Management (ASM).

4 Click OK in the pop-up to launch the Advanced System Manager browser. Click Accept on the certificate prompt within 10 seconds.

5 Sign on ASM using the admin profile.

6 Expand System Configuration.

7 Select Firmware Update Policy.

HMC-Managed

Model 570, 550, or 520 -> HMC -> Version 7 and earlier -> HMC-Managed:

Operating System-Managed

                Important Information: This Server Firmware and HMC Code Wizard provides suggested server firmware and HMC (when applicable) levels for POWER5 Systems. The latest levels might not immediately be shown at this page when they become available; however, the most current levels are available at the Recommended Fixes site.
