Application of this PTF may disable or render ineffective programs that
use system memory addresses not generated by the IBM translator,
including programs that circumvent control technology designed to limit
interactive capacity to purchased levels.  This PTF may be a prerequisite
for future PTFs.  By applying this PTF you authorize and agree to the
foregoing.

This PTF is subject to the terms of the 'IBM License Agreement for Machine
Code', the terms of which were provided in a printed document that was
delivered with the machine.

APAR Error Description / Circumvention

-----------------------------------------------
The IBM i virtual SCSI disk server returns a check condition
response with Hardware Failure sense data if a client read
request encounters a damaged portion of the Network Storage
Space that provides the backing storage for the disk. This
causes IBM i client partitions to display an A6000255 reference
code while the read is repeatedly retried with the same results.

CORRECTION FOR APAR MA42382 :
-----------------------------
The IBM i Licensed Internal Code will attempt to recover from
read data checks on backing disk storage and return a Medium
Error instead of a Hardware Failure on IBM i client disk reads.
This will enable disk read error recovery in the IBM i client
partition which should result in damaged objects instead of disk
unit loss.

CIRCUMVENTION FOR APAR MA42382 :
--------------------------------
None.

Activation Instructions

None.

Special Instructions

This PTF may change the behavior of the IBM i virtual disk server when
encountering unreadable disk pages within Network Server Storage Space
objects used for IBM i client partition disk storage. Before applying
this PTF to the server partition, each IBM i client partition hosted by
this server should also have one of the following PTFs applied:

MF56190 for IBM i 6.1.0 clients
MF56193 for IBM i 6.1.1 clients
MF99004 (Technology Refresh 4) for IBM i 7.1 clients

Failing to apply one of these fixes to an IBM i client partition can
result in an abnormal termination of the client if the server should
encounter an unreadable page.

This PTF should not affect virtual disk behavior for AIX, Linux, or
iSCSI-attached systems hosted by the IBM i server partition.

Default Instructions

THIS IS A DELAYED PTF TO BE APPLIED AT IPL TIME.
