PowerHA Tools for IBM i - Full System FlashCopy

General Page

The PowerHA® Full System FlashCopy (FSFC) for IBM i was created to automate performing backups with minimal impact to a production LPAR. With this toolkit, a full system backup in restricted state can be performed with the users experiencing a pause for (typically) less than 30 seconds. This is achieved using a combination of the HMC to manage the partitions, the ability of IBM i to pause database transactions on a commit boundary, and the FlashCopy function of external storage to create a copy of the production LPAR, from which the backups are taken. This toolkit is provided with services from IBM Technology Expert Labs which includes implementation, customization, skills transfer and support.

The Full System Copy Services Manager (FSFC) for IBM i is unique as it does not require an IASP, but instead Flashes the system ASP. This powerful and flexible toolkit provides additional functions to assist with automation and management of FlashCopy via a set of commands you can use to create a “point in time” copy of a full system for the purposes of performing backups.

Build June 25th, 2024 - Version 5.2 of our toolkit has been released and is available to all customers with active toolkit maintenance agreements. The primary new features support:
  • FlashSystems Volume Group Flashcopy
  • FlashSystems Policy-Based Replication
  • FlashSytems SafeGuarded Copy without CSM
Migrating from consistency-group to volume-group based operations is not trivial and service engagements are strongly encouraged.
PowerHA Tools 4.6 will continue to be supported for some time. The compatibility matrix is available here:

NOTICE regarding Recovery Point FlashCopy (RPF)!
Safeguarded Copies for Storwize products offers many benefits over Recovery Point Flash. It is a more robust solution with a rich feature set and provides additional protection beyond what RPF can offer.
We will continue to support existing RPF customers. We will not offer any new development, testing or implementations of RPF.
PowerHA® Full System FlashCopy (V1) was withdrawn from support on March 31st 2021.
- V1 toolkits include releases up to and including 7.70 and the toolkit resides in library QZRDIASH5.
- V2 toolkit releases start at 4.3 and the toolkit resides in library QZRDHASM. The current FSFC release is 5.2
V1 License and Maintenance entitlement will be transferred to V2 at no cost, but V2 does require the PowerHA® Standard or Enterprise LPP on the controlling LPARs and there may be costs associated with the implementation of V2 as it is a new toolkit implementation. V1 and V2 can co-exist on the same LPARs. Instructions to remove V1 are here.

  • PowerVS Support

The PowerHA Toolkit for IBM i version 4.6+ supports PowerVS API's. This allows it to operate in the IBM Cloud environment (it does not interface directly with PowerVC). While there are some key differences from the on-prem implementations of the toolkit the core functionality remains the same. The goal is to provide an automated backup process using Flash Copy to minimze outages to the production VM's.

A primary difference from the traditional (on-prem) toolkit implementations is the inability to directly access the storage and HMC. All of these interactions must be handled through the available PowerVS REST API's, which are layered on top of PowerVC. That removes some of the flexibility that we have on-prem and is reflected in the toolkit differences. Consider the following:

    • The term 'volumes-clone' is used in the place of Flash Copy.
    • The term VM or PVM is used in the place of LPAR.
    • A VM must have at least one bootable volume attached.
    • The volume marked as bootable has no relation to the IBM i load source.
    • PowerVS does not expose VM adapters, SAN Zoning or tagged I/O to consumers.
    • The maximum volumes attached to a VM is 127.
    • PowerVS volumes-clone cannot re-use an existing target volume.

The toolkit takes all this into consideration and automates creating a usable copy of a production VM for backups. Compared to on-prem operations, the process of detaching, deleting, creating and attaching volumes takes additional time. Creating a snapshot (the basis of a volumes-clone) also takes longer than on-prem, so quiescing database operations might be an issue; rather than seconds, it can take minutes. *FRCWRT is always an option, and *IPL is not supported.

Similar to our on-prem model, a controlling VM with PowerHA Standard or Enterprise is required. The minimum requirements are the same as on-prem, with the exception that 0.25 CPU is the smallest increment avaialable.

The target (flashcopy) VMs must be provisioned and available; they are not deployed 'on the fly'. The toolkit does not automatically modify the resources (CPU, memory, etc) between flashcopies, but this can be done manually by customers. Nor does the toolkit support one target VM servicing multiple source VM volumes-clones. PTF SI80445 is required on all 7.4 IBM i VM's.

Toolkit licensing in PowerVS is slightly different than on-prem. It is licensed on a subscription model that includes entitlement to use the toolkit and access support. License keys are issued with expiration dates.

  • Pre-engagement Requirements
Before implementing the Full System FlashCopy Toolkit, meeting the following requirements will ensure the engagement goes smoothly. We can assist with any of the tasks below, but it will extend the time required to implement the toolkit. We'll send you the toolkit savefile before we arrive, which you can place on the controlling and production LPARs. Our engagement style is to direct the customer on the work involved. While this does extend the time required for the implementation somewhat, it allows them to participate in all the decisions and to understand how the toolkit is installed, take notes, and initiate a dialogue at any point during the skills transfer. If multiple personnel are to be included, a conference room with a projector is preferred. We rarely need to access the physical hardware.

    Compatibility Matrix

The FSFC Manager is undergoing constant development. As the toolkit is "consulting-ware" (as opposed to "shrinkwrapped" software) we have the ability to quickly respond to customer needs with short turnaround times. We release frequently, with minor updates between the versions.

To view the currently installed version and build date, issue the following command:

    DSPDTAARA QZRDHASM/BUILD

Each link below will take you to a list of the features added at that release, and a link which describes how to upgrade from prior releases.
