Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 installation crashes with blue screen after network setup - Servers

During installation of Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 on systems with IBM 10/100 Intel chipset Ethernet adapter, a blue screen crash occurs with the following error: STOP 0x0000000A IRQ_NOT_LES_THAN_EQUAL (ntoskrnl.exe)

Symptom

During installation of Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 on systems with IBM 10/100 Intel chipset Ethernet adapter, a blue screen crash occurs with the following error:

STOP 0x0000000A IRQ_NOT_LES_THAN_EQUAL (ntoskrnl.exe)
CPUID : Genuine Intel 6.8.6 IRQL : 1e SYSVER 0xf0000565

Note: The crash occurs immediately after the networking subsystem is installed.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM eServer xSeries servers:

  • an xSeries 342, type 8669, any model
  • an xSeries 340, type 8656, any model
  • an xSeries 330, type 8654, any model
  • an xSeries 300, type 8672, any model
  • an xSeries 232, type 8668, any model
  • an xSeries 220, type 8645, any model
  • an xSeries 200, type 8478, any model
  • an xSeries 135, type 8654, any model
  • an xSeries 130, type 8654, any model

The system may be any of the following IBM Netfinity servers:

  • a Netfinity 4500R server, type 8656, any model
  • a Netfinity 4000R (US) server, type 8652, any model
  • a Netfinity 4000R (Non-US) server, type 8653, any model
  • a Netfinity 3500-M20 server, type 8657, any model
  • a Netfinity 3500-M10 server, type 8655, any model
  • a Netfinity 3500 server, type 8644, any model
  • a Netfinity 3000 server, type 8476, any model
  • a Netfinity 1000 server, type 8477, any model

The following network operating system is affected:

  • Microsoft Windows NT, version 4.0, with any Service Pack applied
Solution
  1. Get the latest supported driver for your server (from the following URL) for the IBM 10/100 Intel chipset Ethernet adapter: http://www.ibm.com/systems/support
  2. During the networking setup process, Windows NT 4.0 can go out and automatically detect your network adapter and select the native driver for it. Do not pick this option; instead choose "Select from List" and then "Have Disk", then supply the downloaded driver and proceed with the rest of the networking setup.
  3. Complete the Windows NT 4.0 installation using the instructions from the Installing Windows NT Server version 4.0 document.
Additional information

Note: DO NOT use the native driver from the NT 4.0 CD to set up your IBM 10/100 INTEL chipset Ethernet network adapter. The native device driver from the Windows NT 4.0 CD is not the correct driver for this type of adapter.
