1.0 What you will need

If you are using the integrated small computer system interface (SCSI) controller, you need a supported SCSI device driver identified on the IBM Compatibility Web site. See ‘2.0 Where to download device drivers and files’ for additional information.

If you have added an IBM ServeRAID adapter to the eserver xSeries 330, you need the following:

You also need a blank diskette to create an Emergency Repair Diskette (label it, Emergency Repair Diskette).

2.0 Where to download device drivers and files

To view helpful IBM server hints and troubleshooting tips for installing Windows NT Server Version 4.0, do the following:

  1. Click Hints and Tips inside the left blue margin.
  2. Select Windows NT under category.

Continue with ‘3.0 Detailed installation instructions'.

3.0 Detailed installation instructions

NOTE: Network adapter devices can be installed and configured during or after the installation.

3.1 Setting up the hardware for Windows NT Server Version 4.0 installation

  1. Unplug the server and remove the side cover.
  2. For the initial installation, install all the microprocessors you plan to use and remove all adapters and devices that are not required to get the base operating system installed. For example, if installing multiple network adapters, only install one now. If you are using a tape drive or external SCSI devices, disconnect them temporarily. After the operating system is starting without errors, reinstall the removed adapters and devices one at a time. This procedure simplifies the installation process.

    NOTE
: If you plan to use an external direct access storage device (DASD) enclosure, the following instructions do not apply. Refer to the documentation provided with the external enclosure for the correct setup; then, continue with '3.2 Before you install Windows NT Server Version 4.0'.

  3. Install the drive(s) into the drive bay(s).
  4. Reinstall the side cover.
  5. Plug in the server.

3.2 Before you install Windows NT Server Version 4.0

This document provides the IBM eserver xSeries 330 user with the installation instructions to perform basic NT Server installations. Windows NT Server Version 4.0 presents many different installation options. You might install or uninstall options that will allow maximum performance from your IBM server. This might result in windows and messages that will differ from those in this document. Be sure to perform the following these instructions for installing Windows NT Server Version 4.0 precisely to ensure that Windows NT Server Version 4.0 is installed correctly.

Determine if the system is equipped with an IBM ServeRAID card. If you have equipped systems, please review Appendix A before proceeding with ‘3.4 Installing Windows NT Server Version 4.0’.

Note: Users with systems equipped with a ServeRAID card must perform additional procedures.
