IBM System x3550 (Type 1013, 1913, 7978) - 2.5 inch Drive Back Plane removal movie

To remove the 2.5 inch Drive Back Plane:

  1. Turn off the server and all peripheral devices and disconnect all power cords and external cables.

Remove the Top Cover:

  1. Slide the cover release latches and rotate the Fan Door open.
  2. Loosen the captive screw on the rear of the chassis.
  3. Slide the cover towards the rear of the server approximately one half inch and then lift the cover off the server and set it aside.

Remove the 2.5 inch Drive Back Plane:

  1. Disconnect the SAS signal cable from the system board and the SAS power cable from the power back plane.
  2. Remove three screws from the top cover.
  3. Slide the disk drive cage assemble out of the front of the system.
  4. Press the release latch and rotate the drive tray handle to the open position.
  5. Then pull the drive to disconnect it from the back plane. Use the same procedure to disconnect all installed drives.
  6. Disconnect the signal and power cables from the back plane.
  7. Press to release the two spring retaining latches and lift the back plane from the cage assembly.
