What are the differences between V7R5 and V7R6?

Cause

This page provides an overview and comparison of the release timing and key enhancements introduced in IBM i versions V7R5 and V7R6. 

V7R5 was released on May 10, 2022, while V7R6 followed on April 18, 2025.

V7R6 introduces multi-factor authentication (MFA) directly into the operating system, offering a major security improvement at no additional cost.

This document does not explain all details about the differences between V7R5 an V7R6 but simply highlights a summary overview.

    • V7R5: advice is to stay on IM 1.9.3. IM requires Java 8 SE 32bit.
    • V7R6: IM 1.9.3 or newer 1.9.x version required. IM 1.10 and higher not supported due to JDK 11 requirement.
