Is there a Cognos Analytics Disaster Recovery guide?

Cause

Organizations require a Disaster Recovery (DR) strategy for IBM Cognos Analytics to ensure business continuity in case of system failure or site outage. 

Answer

IBM does not provide a single dedicated DR guide for Cognos Analytics.

 

Firstly, from the Cognos Analytics perspective there are 2 actions you can carry out:

These are:

  1. Configuring standby Content Managers - IBM Documentation
    Configure one primary Content Manager and at least one standby Content Manager
  2. Failover for Multiple Dispatchers - IBM Documentation
    Deploy multiple dispatcher nodes and configure load balancing through Cognos Gateway

These steps ensure that in the event that one host becomes unavailable, your Cognos environment will still function.


With a multi-component architecture, You will always have 1 primary CM and 1 standby CM. If CM1 goes down, the standby will take over.

Outside of Cognos Analytics environment , there are a few steps that can also be implemented

1. Backup Strategies: Regularly back up the Cognos Content Store, Audit DB, and Notification Store, data sources, and configuration settings. This includes using methods such as full backups, incremental backups, and differential backups based on your recovery time objectives (RTO) and recovery point objectives (RPO).

2. Data Replication: Implement data replication for databases and file systems where Cognos stores its data. This can involve using database-level replication features or third-party replication tools to maintain an up-to-date copy of the data in a secondary location.

3. Testing and Validation: Regularly test the disaster recovery plan to verify that all components function correctly under real-world scenarios. This includes simulating disaster scenarios and verifying that recovery processes work as intended.

4. Post-Recovery Validation: Verify the integrity and accessibility of restored data to confirm successful recovery
