TS7700 (3957-VED, 3948-VED or 3948-VEF ) machines with new TPM module (PN: 03PK608)
Abstract
A critical server component has gone End Of Life and been replaced with a new version effective immediately after the date of this notification.
This component is the Trusted Platform Module (TPM). Details are as follow:
- Old TPM (PN: 00VK519) supports firmware FW950.B0 (VL950_149).
- Current TPM (PN: 03K608) supports firmware FW950.E0 (VL950_179)
TS7700 code level R6.0 GA - 8.60.0.115 lacks support for the new TPM with firmware FW950.E0 (VL950_179).
If any 3957-VED, 3948-VED or 3948-VEF machine with code level R6.0 GA - 8.60.0.115 or below has the need to get a replacement from the old TPM card (PN: 00VK519) to the new TPM card (PN: 03K608) the system will not be able to boot.
There is enough FRU stock of old TPM cards (PN: 03K608) in order to service any customer that has active machines with R6.0 GA - 8.60.0.115 or below for the foreseeable future.
Description
The TPM module ensures your system starts in a trusted state and protects sensitive cryptographic operations.
In order to address the lack of firmware support of the new TPM card (PN: 03K608) by the code level R6.0 GA - 8.60.0.115, a newer code level R6.0 PGA0 (8.60.0.116) has been released.
Any TS7700 customer with an active 3957-VED, 3948-VED or 3948-VEF machine with code level R6.0 GA - 8.60.0.115 can be certain that has the old TPM card (PN: 00VK519).
For these customers, it is not necessary to update their systems to code level to R6.0 PGA0 - 8.60.0.116 since previous version of the TPM (PN: 00VK519) is supported at code level R6.0 GA - 8.60.0.115 at all times.
Code level R6.0 PGA0 - 8.60.0.116 is to be included in new machines shipping from manufacturing after the date of this publication in order to bring support for those new TPM cards (PN: 03K608).
Important note: Code level R6.0 PGA0 - 8.60.0.116 is compatible with both versions of the TPM modules (PN - 00VK519 and 03K608)
Recommended Action
For customer receiving new TS7780 (3949-VEF) machines, there is no action needed. Systems will ship with the code level R6.0 PGA0 - 8.60.0.116, immediately having support out of the box.
Note for customers that currently have active systems with the old TPM card (PN: 00VK519) and code level R6.0 GA - 8.60.0.115:
- No action is needed
- No upgrade to R6.0 PGA0 - 8.60.0.116 is needed
- If a replacement of an old TPM card (PN: 00VK519) is needed, enough FRU stock will be available. SSRs are going to help with this process.
