Q&A:
Question 1 - It seems we want to set auto-managed to Yes, enabling HPA-controlled pods. Is there a way to selectively start or stop pods on-demand? Is updating the CRD and redeploying the only available method? Alternatively, are there other mechanisms to scale App/Agent pods up or down dynamically?
Answer - Yes, when auto-managed is set to "yes" and Horizontal Pod Autoscaler (HPA) is defined, the Operator delegates control of the replica count to the HPA.This means:
  • The replica count is dynamically managed based on metrics like CPU or memory usage.
  • The Operator updates the corresponding Custom Resource (CR) instances and underlying Deployments to reflect the HPA-driven scaling.
Regarding selective stop/start of pods:
Since HPA controls the replica count, manual scaling via CR updates is not recommended and may be overridden by the HPA. However, here are a few options depending on your intent:
To scale up/down pods manually (outside HPA):
  • You can temporarily disable HPA by removing or modifying the HPA object.
  • Then, update the CR to set the desired replica count manually.
  • But this breaks the auto-managed behavior, so it’s not ideal for long-term use.
 To stop/start specific pods on-demand:
  • If the goal is to decommission or stop a specific server, you can remove it from the server list (e.g., in the CR or config map).
  • The Operator will reconcile and remove the corresponding pod.
  • This is the preferred method for on-demand control without interfering with HPA.
 OMServers are also on-demand:
  • These can be managed similarly — by updating the server list or configuration, the Operator will handle pod lifecycle accordingly.
Summary:
  • With auto-managed: yes and HPA enabled, replica count is auto-controlled.
  • For on-demand pod control, update the server list or config — not the replica count.
  • Avoid manual CR updates for scaling unless HPA is disabled.
Question 2 - Do we need any specific fix pack to be deployed for IV demand sync service ?
Answer - This feature is planned for inclusion in future updates. To access it, clients will need to be on the corresponding fix pack. Global Inventory Visibility (GIV): Tentatively expected in the upcoming fix pack. Inventory Visibility (IV): Tentatively targeted for the January fix pack.
Question 3 - I have attempted multiple times to request access to the OMS Agent Preview Program, but haven’t been successful in getting trial access. Could someone from IBM assist me with this?
Answer - Thank you for your interest in the OMS Agent Preview Program. If you are using IBM Sterling® Order Management SaaS and have already signed up, please wait at least 7 days after registration. If you still don’t have access after that period, kindly create a support case so we can assist you further and ensure your access is enabled.
Note: As of today, the preview is available only for the SaaS version of IBM Sterling® Order Management System.
For on-premises OMS customers, we appreciate your interest and will keep you informed as updates become available. Please stay tuned.
