IBM i PowerVS Cloud - Obtaining and installing BRMS (5770-BR2)

Summary

This document provides the methods for obtaining 5770-BR2 for your IBM i PowerVS cloud VM. This document also contains a link to our IBM development partner, Forta, which contains the installation instructions as well as migration instructions from 5770BR1 to 5770BR2.

Environment

  • IBM i PowerVS Cloud VM
  • IBM i 7.4 and newer

Steps

1) Obtain the 5770-BR2 BRMS Licensed Product
     There are multiple ways for obtaining 5770BR2 BRMS product:
          Option A. The 5770-BR2 Licensed Product is included for any Virtual Machine Instances that were deployed from a current IBM supplied image 
          Option B. If your Virtual Machine Instance has a Virtual Serial Number (VSN), then you can obtain 5770-BR2 from the IBM Entitled Systems Support website:

               *Note: Be sure to select the 5770-BR2
          Option C. Deploy a Cloud Optical Repository (COR) Virtual Machine Instance and set up your VMI as a NFS client to that COR VMI to use Network Install:

          Option D. Deploy a new IBM i VMI of the same release and language from an IBM supplied image or your own image that has 5772-BR2 installed. Once the VM with 5770BR2 is available and has network, then use the following commands:
               On the VM that has 5770BR2, create a save file to save the licensed program: CRTSAVF FILE(QGPL/BR2)
               On the VM that has 5770BR2, save the licensed program to the save file: SAVLICPGM LICPGM(5770BR2) DEV(*SAVF) SAVF(QGPL/BR2)
               On the VM where you want to install 5770BR2, pre-create the save file to receive the transfer: CRTSAVF FILE(QGPL/BR2)
               On the VM where you want to install 5770BR2, transfer the save file:
                    FTP x.x.x.x
                    enter profile
                    enter password
                    cd QGPL
                    lcd QGPL
                    get BR2 (replace
                    exit
               On the VM where you want to install 5770BR2,  verify BR2 exists in the save file: DSPSAVF FILE(QGPL/BR2)
               On the VM where you want to install 5770BR2, follow the instructions in the link of Step 2 for installation. On the 'Install product 5770-BR2', you will restore 5770BR2 from your save file with the following command: RSTLICPGM LICPGM(5770BR2) DEV(*SAVF) SAVF(QGPL/BR2)
          Option E. Open an IBM i Software Support case by specifying 'IBM i on PowerVS', to obtain an image of the 5770BR2 licensed program for your IBM i release and language: 
 
 
2) Install BRMS Licensed Program Product 5770BR2 (or migrate from 5770BR1 to 5770BR2):
     Follow the installation steps provided by IBM's development partner Fortra:

3) BRMS license key to be automatically injected:
   Ensure that your VM has the "Minimum PTF levels for IBM i": https://cloud.ibm.com/docs/power-iaas?topic=power-iaas-minimum-levels
   There is a 70 day grace period for the BRMS product. With the minimum PTFs applied and the VM up (fully started or even restricted state is acceptable)  License keys are automatically injected on Wednesdays.
