Troubleshooting
Problem
This document applies to IBM clients who are running an IBM i Virtual Server Image in the IBM Cloud Power Virtual Server (PowerVS) environment. If license keys for the operating system or any IBM licensed programs were not applied, then continue with this document.
Symptom
License keys are missing on an IBM i Virtual Server Image, migrating an IBM i image to PowerVS, or purchasing one of the chargeable add-on licenses for 5733-ICC, 5770-HAS, 5733-WQX, or 5770-WDS.
Cause
On a new virtual server image created from one of the stock images, all of the prerequisites are included. However, if you are migrating you must ensure that all of the prerequisite PTFs and product options are installed for automatic license key injection to work. https://cloud.ibm.com/docs/power-iaas?topic=power-iaas-minimum-levels
If the license keys for 5733-ICC, 5770-HAS, 5733-WQX, or 5770-WDS are missing check on the PowerVS portal that the applicable product was purchased before proceeding.
***IMPORTANT***
If you are receiving a license error message, this licensing issue needs to be resolved before the grace period expires, even if your IBM i is hosted on an IBM cloud based platform. Failure to resolve the licensing error may result in logon or licensed programs not running properly. License key injection occurs every Wednesday at various times. If the partition is powered down beyond restricted state, license key injection will not be successful. The IBM i Standard Grace Period is 70 days, but if your license key injection is not successful after Wednesday, address the issue before the next Wednesday key injection.
*Note1: Even with the minimum PTFs applied, there are a few conditions where the license key injection is known to fail due to limitations in the current code. IBM Support and Development are aware of this issue and will be enhancing our code in a future release. If this is the case, then after the Wednesday license key injection with the required PTFs applied prior to the injection, and after diagnostic data has been reviewed by IBM Support, then IBM i Support will provide the base license keys within 1-2 business days.
*Note2: After license keys are installed, older License Management PTFs may still log Grace period, 5770SS1 5052 license errors, etc. The following License Management PTFs or their newer superseded PTFs should be applied:
Diagnosing The Problem
Verify that the minimum required PTFs and Products are installed by checking the link in Section A. Follow the steps in Section B for IBM i PowerVS license key issues. If license keys are missing for one or more of the chargeable add-on LPPs (5733-ICC, 5770-HAS, 5733-WQX, 5770-WDS) add the steps in Section C.
Section A
Ensure that all of the prerequisite PTFs and product options are installed for automatic license key injection to work. Do no proceed with further data collection until after these licensed keys and products are installed, and after the licensed keys are injected automatically on the weekend:
You can also use QMGTOOLS to check if the PTFs are installed (requires November 13, 2024 or newer build):
1) Load the latest version of QMGTOOLS:
2) Check the PowerVS Cloud Key Injection Report:
GO QMGTOOLS/MG > 16 > 5 > 10 "Check PowerVS/Cloud license injection"
Section B
If the prerequisite PTFs and products are installed, but the licensed keys are still not being automatically injected during the weekend cron job, then follow these steps in Section B:
1) Load the latest version of QMGTOOLS:
*Note: If QMGTOOLS installed and has internet access, then GO QMGTOOLS/MG, option 13, F6 to download and update
2) Check the PowerVS Cloud Key Injection Report:
GO QMGTOOLS/MG > 16 > 5 > 10 "Check PowerVS/Cloud license injection"
2a. Verify the Fixes required are installed
2b. Check if there were any key injection attempts
2c. Verify that your VM was not down during the Wednesday Key injection
3) Collect a QMGTOOLS/LICKEYSNAP with the following parameters and send the resulting .zip file.
QMGTOOLS/LICKEYSNAP DAYSPRV(7)
Section C
If license keys for one of the chargeable add-on LPPs is missing, follow these additional steps. Ensure the LPP was purchased in the PowerVS portal before proceeding.
1) From the PowerVS portal navigate to the Server Details Page for the Virtual Server Image in question.
2) Click edit, then de-select one or more products in question and save the configuration.
3) Edit the Virtual Server Image again and select one or more products for purchase again and save the configuration.
4) On the IBM i check if the licenses were applied by entering the WRKLICINF command from an IBM i command line.

If the keys are still missing, then send the PowerVS cloud key collection:
Collect a QMGTOOLS/LICKEYSNAP with the following parameters and send the resulting .zip file.
QMGTOOLS/LICKEYSNAP DAYSPRV(7)
