Question
Is the installation of sudo package supported on PowerVM Virtual I/O Server (VIOS)?
Cause
I need to configure an application on Power VM VIOS. In order to achieve that, sudo configuration is required.
Answer
When it comes to PowerVM VIOS, there is a select list of software applications approved by IBM to be installed on a VIOS LPAR. At the time of this writing, sudo is not approved to be installed on VIOS. For an up-to-date list, refer to
Should you still wish to install it, carefully review IBM VIOS support and Third Vendor Application for expectations.
An alternative to sudo on VIOS may depend on what the goal is. If the goal is to allow command execution as another user (other than the prime administrator "padmin" user), that can be accomplished by setting up user roles as explained at How to use RBAC on VIOS.
