How to transfer a SAVF to your PC using ACS (Access Client Solutions)

Question & Answer

Question

How to transfer a SAVF (IBM i save file) to a PC using ACS (IBM i Access Client Solutions) instead of using FTP?

Answer

Use the "Integrated File System" function within ACS to transfer a SAVF to your PC without the need to use FTP.

- Open IBM i Access Client Solutions

Note:  If you do not have Access Client Solutions, review Obtaining IBM i Access Client Solutions.

- Select your system from the "System" drop-down as seen below

==> Click on "Integrated File System"

The following Window pops up

Note: The Directory defaults to your home directory on the IFS. Change the path to the library the SAVF is in.

- Set your Directory path to view the contents of your library

In the following example, my library is "rhdieser". To see the contents of this library I have to use the following path to use IFS naming standards: qsys.lib/rhdieser.lib

Note: Start the path with a forward slash "/" and use the ".lib" extension. "MyLib" would be /qsys.lib/MyLib.lib

- Locate the SAVF

==> Right-click the file
==> Click on "Download"
==> Note the Destination path on the "Download" pop-up
==> Click "OK"

- Monitor the download progress

- The file is downloaded to your "Downloads" folder by default

==> You can change this by selecting "Edit" -> "Preferences..."
==> You can also set your "Initial Directory" as desired rather than default to the USRPRFs' home directory
==> You can select "Download..." to specify a different path

Note: Since this is a "SAVF", the recommendation is to rename the file extension from ".FILE" to ".SAVF". The SAVF extension makes it easier to identify the content of the file.

Note: If you are planning to send this save file to IBM for a support case, the ".SAVF" extension will allow an automated tool to restore the save file after the upload completes.

For an alternative to ACS "Integrated File System" function, see FTP instructions in the "Related" link below.
