PROTECT STGPOOL command completes processing with zero extents protected

Flashes (Alerts)

Abstract

As documented in APAR IT32181, IBM Spectrum Protect users might receive a message that the PROTECT STGPOOL command was processed successfully, even though no extents were transferred from the source replication server to the target replication server.

Content

Problem summary
This APAR affects users who installed IBM Spectrum Protect level 8.1.9.100, 8.1.9.102, or 8.1.9.103 on a source replication server and ran the PROTECT STGPOOL command with the default parameter setting FORCERECONCILE=NO.
If the FORCERECONCILE=YES parameter setting is specified, the PROTECT STGPOOL operation transfers all necessary extents from the source replication server to the target replication server. In this case, the issued specified in APAR IT32181 does not occur.
If a source replication server is affected by this issue, and the administrative schedule runs the PROTECT STGPOOL command followed by the REPLICATE NODE command, the PROTECT STGPOOL process might finish successfully in minutes. However, the REPLICATE NODE process might require an extended period. This situation occurs because the node replication process must transfer the extents that were excluded by the PROTECT STGPOOL process.
If the source replication server runs the PROTECT STGPOOL command without the REPLICATE NODE command, data at the target replication server is incomplete because not all data was transferred during the operation.
Levels affected
This issue affects IBM Spectrum Protect levels 8.1.9.100, 8.1.9.102, and 8.1.9.103.
Diagnosing the issue

To determine whether your server configuration is affected, run the PROTECT STGPOOL command with the PREVIEW=YES parameter setting. This command starts a process to count the number of extent candidates.  Upon completion, examine the ANR4981I message and look for a nonzero value in the Extents to be protected field, as shown in the sample output:

ANR4981I The preview of protect storage pool on STGXXXX server SRVXXX to STGXXX on server SRVXXXis complete.
        Extents to be protected: 229944.
        Extents to be deleted: 0.
Amount to be protected: 232 GB.

After the preview operation is completed with an indication that the server has extents to protect, a subsequent PROTECT STGPOOL process completes processing and issues message ANR4980I. If the issue occurs, the Extents protected field displays the value 0 of 0, as shown in the sample output:

ANR4980I The protect storage pool process for STGXXX  on server SRVXXX to STGXXX on server SRVXXX is complete.
Extents protected: 0 of 0. Extents failed to protect: 0.
        Extents deleted: 36737 of 36737.
Amount protected: 0 bytes of 0 bytes. Amount failed: 0 bytes.
Amount transferred: 0 bytes. Elapsed time: 0 Days, 0 Hours, 3 Minutes.
Problem resolution
Apply the fixing level when it becomes available and take the following actions:
  1. If you ran both the REPLICATE NODE and PROTECT STGPOOL commands, after you apply the fixing level, the deduplicated extents are processed by the PROTECT STGPOOL command. The REPLICATE NODE process takes place as it did before the error occurred. No further action is required other than to monitor operations and ensure that the REPLICATE NODE and PROTECT STGPOOL commands run as expected.

  2. If you ran only the PROTECT STGPOOL command, after you apply the fixing level, run the command again and verify that the Extents protected field displays a value greater than zero. Also verify that the process is transferring data as expected.
Fixes
Fixes for the IBM Spectrum Protect server that resolve APAR IT32181 will be delivered in the following server levels. This is subject to change at the sole discretion of IBM:
8.1.9.104 or higher
8.1.9.200 or higher
8.1.10
