Abstract
This document details the hardware and software requirements for all of the IBM Spectrum Protect™ Snapshot V8.1.9 components that run on AIX and Linux.

The following IBM Spectrum Protect™ Snapshot components share core hardware and software requirements. Therefore, the requirements for all of the following components are grouped in a single requirements document. The components are:
- IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot for DB2
- IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot for Oracle
- IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot for Oracle (with SAP® environments)
- IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot for Custom Applications

Requirements Common to All Components
The following sections provide a quick overview of the basic requirements for IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot.
Requirements Common to All Components on the AIX Platform
Hardware:
- Compatible System p® server hardware that is supported by the operating system and the application
- At least 1 GB of disk space (extra temporary space is required during installation)
- At least 1 GB of extra disk space for each database instance that is protected by Spectrum Protect Snapshot
Software:
- One of these operating system options, as supported by the application:
- 64-bit AIX 7.1, and later 7.1.x levels
- 64-bit AIX 7.2, and later 7.2.x levels
- File systems supported:
JFS, JFS2
For Custom Applications only: GPFS - The gzip utility must be installed on the system and must be available in the PATH environment variable.
More Operating Environments Supported:
- High Availability Cluster Multiprocessing (HACMP™) and PowerHA®
Requirements Common to All Components on the Linux x64 Platform
Hardware:
- Intel EM64T, AMD Opteron, or higher machine that is supported by the operating system and the application
- At least 400 MB of disk space (extra temporary space is required during installation)
- At least 400 MB of extra disk space for each database instance that is protected by Spectrum Protect Snapshot
Software:
- One of these operating system options, as supported by the application:
- 64-bit SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 11, and later service packs
- 64-bit SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 12 up to service pack 3
- 64-bit SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 15 GA level (with IBM Spectrum Protect™ Snapshot version 8.1.6.1 and later versions)
- 64-bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6 releases 6.1 up to 6.10
- 64-bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7 release 7.0, 7.4 up to 7.7
- **Supported Logical Volume Manager: LVM2, details on supported levels of LVM2 can be found in the attached Pre-installation Checklist.
Note: Starting with RHEL 7 and SLES 12 LVM2 has enabled the Metadata Daemon (lvmetad) by default. The LVM Metadata Daemon causes Spectrum Protect Snapshot operations to fail.
It is required to disable the LVM Metadata Daemon as described in the Red Hat documentation https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/7/html/Logical_Volume_Manager_Administration/metadatadaemon.html

- Before starting a Spectrum Protect Snapshot remote restore operation check the problem described in APAR IT16596 and the local fix documented there.
- Note: OLVM Volumes are supported, however not when the volume is in the "proxy" state (Migrating). IBM System Storage DS8000 hardware:
- IBM System Storage DS8000™ (DS8100, DS8300, DS8700, DS8800 or DS8870) with DS8000 Release Version 3.1 or later versions. Earlier versions might be supported by certain microcode level updates. Refer to the Pre-installation Checklist for details.

Requirements Common to All Components for offloaded backups to IBM Spectrum Protect
- Any IBM Spectrum Protect Server version currently supported by IBM Spectrum Protect
- Any version of the IBM Spectrum Protect Storage Agent, currently supported by IBM Spectrum Protect, is required for LAN-free restore operations. The IBM Spectrum Protect Storage Agent is a component of the IBM Spectrum Protect for Storage Area Networks product.
- Data Protection for Oracle V7.1.x levels, or later releases and versions are required when performing offloaded backups by using the Spectrum Protect Snapshot for Oracle component. Data Protection for Oracle is a component of the IBM Spectrum Protect for Databases product.
- IBM Spectrum Protect for Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) V7.1, and later levels, releases, and versions are required in the following situations:
- When you are running offloaded backups in SAP® with Oracle environments.
- When you are running offloaded backups in SAP® with Oracle environments by using Oracle RMAN.
- IBM Spectrum Protect for Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) V7.1, and later levels, releases, and versions are optional when running offloaded backups in SAP® with DB2 environments.
- IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client V7.1.x, and later levels, releases, and versions are required when running offloaded backups by using the Spectrum Protect Snapshot for Custom Applications.
- Any IBM Spectrum Protect API supported by Data Protection for Oracle and/or IBM Spectrum Protect for Enterprise Resource Planning and/or DB2 native IBM Spectrum Protect agent as applicable to your environment.

- 64-bit Oracle Enterprise Edition 18c at a level certified by the respective SAP® release
- 64-bit Oracle Enterprise Edition 19c at a level certified by the respective SAP® release
Note: Multitenant (pluggable) databases are not supported
SAP® Environment Requirements:
- SAP BR*Tools 7.40
Note: IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot interfaces with the SAP BR*Tools through the backint interface (BC-BRI volume based)

Application Options:
- Any application running in an environment supported by Spectrum Protect Snapshot
GPFS file system:
- IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot for Unix and Linux V8.1.9 supports GPFS file system snapshots for Custom Applications.
