Follow the eServer xSeries network operating system (NOS) installation instructions provided in this document in sequential order unless these instructions advise you differently. Windows and messages might differ from those described in this document. Throughout this document, the term select denotes the use of arrow keys or the mouse to highlight and choose a menu item.

1.0 Before installing Windows 2000
This document provides xSeries 235 system users with the installation instructions for a basic Windows 2000 Server installation process. Windows 2000 Server presents many different installation options. You might install or uninstall options that will facilitate tuning the xSeries 235 server to meet your individual needs. If you do this, you might create windows and messages that will differ from those in this document. To ensure that you install Windows 2000 correctly, be sure to follow these instructions for installing Windows 2000 precisely. Windows 2000 allows you to install components after you have completed the installation process.

1.1 ServeRAID
Determine whether the system is equipped with an IBM ServeRAID card. If you have equipped your xSeries 235 with a ServeRAID card, please review section 4.0 Appendix before you proceed with the installation instructions in section 2.0.

NOTE: If you have a system that is equipped with a ServeRAID card, you must perform additional procedures in section 4.0 Appendix.

2.0 Installation instructions

  1. Insert the Windows 2000 Setup CD into the CD-ROM drive and restart the system. The system will start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD.
  2. A few seconds after the Windows Setup screen appears, the message “Setup is inspecting your computer’s hardware configuration” appears. Press F6 to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver.
  3. Windows 2000 Setup appears a window to manually specify a controller. Select S to specify additional devices.
  4. Windows Setup will prompt the user to insert the manufacturer's supplied hardware support disk.
    • If installing an IBM ServeRAID card, insert the IBM ServeRAID device driver disk.
    • If installing the onboard LSI SCSI controller, insert the diskette that contains the LSI SCSI device driver.
    After inserting the correct disk, press Enter. For information on downloading either the IBM ServeRAID device driver or the LSI Logic PCI SCS/FC driver, click Servers - File and device driver downloads and navigate to the required driver.
  5. Complete one of the following steps:
    • If installing a ServeRAID device, select the appropriate IBM ServeRAID controller driver.
    • If installing the onboard LSI SCSI device, select the LSI Logic PCI SCSI/FC MPI miniport driver.
    After making a selection, press Enter.
  6. After Setup finishes copying files that support the IBM ServeRAID controller or the LSI Logic PCI SCSI/FC controller, you have the option to specify additional SCSI adapters, CD-ROM drives, or special disk controllers for use with Windows 2000. If there are no more additional mass storage devices to specify, press Enter.
  7. The Windows 2000 setup window appears after a short delay. The Windows 2000 setup will take a few minutes to load. The Welcome to Setup appears at the top right corner of the window. Press Enter to install the Windows 2000 Server.
  8. The Windows 2000 licensing agreement appears. Read the licensing agreement and press the Page Down key to scroll to the bottom of the window. Then select I Agree by pressing F8.
  9. Windows 2000 Setup will show all hard disk storage available on the system.
  10. You can select or create a partition to install Windows 2000 Server. Complete one of the following three options:
    • Allow setup to create a partition: Press Enter when you highlight non-partitioned space on your hard drive. Setup will partition the entire disk as one primary partition.
    • Create a partition: To create a partition, highlight the non-partitioned space on the hard drive. Press the C key; you will be prompted to indicate how much available space to allocate from the non-partitioned drive. Type the amount of space (in megabytes) and press Enter.
    • Delete a partition: Use this option only if there are partitions that need to be permanently deleted to allow enough room to create new partitions.
  11. After you have selected a drive to partition, setup will prompt you to select a file system. Select the NTFS file system (unless you dual start with an operating system that does not support NTFS).
  12. The system restarts. The graphical user interface (GUI) phase of the Windows 2000 Setup Wizard appears. Windows setup will create a Welcome window when Windows 2000 is fully loaded.
  13. Click Next to continue. Windows setup will automatically install and configure devices in the computer. This process will take several minutes.
    The Regional Settings window will default to U.S. settings.
  14. Make changes if you do not install the system in the U.S. Click Next to continue.

    NOTE: You can modify the regional settings after you have installed Windows 2000 by clicking Regional Options in the Control Panel.

  15. Setup will display the Personalize Your Software window that will prompt you for your name and organization name. In the Name field, type your name, and in the Organizations field, type the organization's name. The names selected will be used as default computer names. Applications installed on the system later will use this information for the product registration and document identification.
  16. Click Next to continue. Setup will prompt you for the Windows 2000 Setup CD-Key.
  17. Type the Windows 2000 Setup CD-Key in the appropriate fields.
  18. Click Next to continue.
  19. Setup will display the Licensing Modes window with two choices of licensing modes. Select the appropriate licensing mode for your organization.
  20. Click Next to continue.
  21. The System Name and Administrator Password window appears. You will be prompted for an administrator password and computer name. (Notice that setup uses the organization name (entered earlier) as a suggested name for the computer.) Type your desired computer name and password.

    NOTE: Passwords are case sensitive. Be sure to use a combination of upper and lower case letters with at least one number for your password.

  22. Click Next to continue.
  23. From the Name and Administrator Password window, select or deselect components for the installation process. To install a component, select the box next to the component. Components that you do not select will not be installed.
  24. Click Next to continue.
  25. At the Time Zone window, set the current time for Windows 2000. To change the date, click the button to the right of the date. To change the time, highlight the value you want to change and enter the correct values by using the keyboard or the up and down arrow keys.

    NOTE: Windows 2000 services perform many tasks that are dependent upon the successful completion of the computer’s time and date settings. Be sure to select the correct time zone for the system's location to avoid subsequent problems.

  26. Click Next to continue.
  27. From the Networking Settings window, select either typical or custom settings. If you are prompted, enter the appropriate network information. Click Next to install Windows networking components.
  28. From the Workgroup or Computer Domain windows, select one of the following options:
    • No, this computer is not on a network, it is a network without a domain.
    • Yes, make this computer a member of the following domain box. Type the workgroup or domain name in the appropriate fields.
  29. Click Next to continue.
  30. In the Installing Component window, setup appears the status as it installs and configures the remaining operating system components according to the options that you specified. This step will take several minutes.

    Next, setup appears the Performing Final Tasks window, which shows the status as setup finishes copying the appropriate files. This process might take several minutes.

  31. Remove the Windows Server CD from the CD-ROM drive and click Finish. Windows 2000 restarts and runs the newly installed version of Windows 2000 Server.
  32. After the Windows 2000 Server has finished starting up, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to logon. When the desktop appears, you will see the Windows 2000 Configure your server wizard. The server wizard will assist in the setup of any additional Windows 2000 components on your server and will help configure the additional components that you selected during the installation process.

3.0 Installing additional unknown drivers
Open Device Manager by right clicking My Computer, selecting Manage, and clicking Device Manager once.

There will be four unknown devices if the optional Remote Supervisor adapter is installed and three standard unknown devices if the Remote Supervisor adapter is not installed. The IBM Alert Standard Format Update will be installed to eliminate one of the standard Unknown Devices seen in the Windows Device Manager. This INF will not install any device drivers. The performance of the machine will not be affected.

The other two standard unknown devices are the Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet device and the IBM eServer Active PCI (hot-plug) device.

There will be a fourth unknown device if the system is equipped with a Remote Supervisor adapter. Installing the Remote Supervisor adapter driver will also install the following drivers:

  1. Remote Keyboard + Mouse
  2. Remote Supervisor
  3. Remote Serial Port

3.1 Remote Supervisor Adapter (optional adapter for the xSeries 235)
Complete the following steps:

  1. To install the Remote Supervisor Adapter device driver, insert the Remote Supervisor Adapter Support CD into the CD-ROM drive on the server. The Remote Supervisor Adapter driver can also be downloaded from the Web onto a diskette. For information on downloading the Remote Supervisor Adapter device driver, click Servers - File and device driver downloads and navigate to find the latest Remote Supervisor Adapter device driver.
  2. On the desktop, right-click the My Computer icon and select Manage.
  3. Click Device Manager. The Remote Supervisor Adapter hardware is detected automatically as an unknown device under other devices.
  4. Right click other PCI device and select Properties.

    NOTE: If there is no unknown device called “other PCI bridge device”, right click one of the unknown devices and a pull-down menu will appear. Select Properties. Look under Location and you should see “on PCI standard ISA Bridge”. If it does not, click Cancel and right click the next unknown device.

  5. Click Update Driver and a Welcome to Upgrade Device driver Wizard window appears.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Under Optional search locations:
    • Select CD-ROM Drives if using the Remote Supervisor Adapter Support CD.
    • Select Floppy Disk Drives if using a driver download from the Web.
  8. Click Next. The Hardware Wizard locates the appropriate drivers for the Remote Supervisor Adapter hardware, and then installs them from the CD or floppy disk.
  9. When the "System found a driver for device" prompt appears, click Next to install the driver.

    NOTE: The Remote Supervisor driver will be installed at this point. The Remote Supervisor contains the Remote Serial Port and Remote Keyboard/Mouse drivers. The hardware wizard will detected these two drivers after the Remote Supervisor has been installed.

  10. After installing the Remote Supervisor, the hardware wizard will detect the Remote Keyboard/Mouse device. A New Hardware Found window is displayed, alerting the user that there is additional new hardware for which to install drivers.
  11. Click Next. The Install Hardware Device Driver window prompts the user that the Multifunction device driver (Remote Supervisor Adapter + Mouse Keyboard) will be installed.
  12. Click Next. NOTE: Although Windows shows that the Remote Supervisor Adapter + Mouse/Keyboard driver is being installed at this point, it is really only the Remote Mouse/Keyboard driver that is being installed. The Remote Supervisor Adapter shows up here again because it contained the Remote Mouse/Keyboard driver and it acts as a “parent driver”.
  13. An Optional Search Location menu appears. Deselect everything but the Floppy Disk Drive.
  14. Click Next. When the "System found a driver for device" prompt appears, click Next to install the Remote Keyboard/Mouse driver. You will now be prompted to restart the computer.
  15. Click Yes. When the system has rebooted with Windows, the hardware wizard will prompt the user that a new hardware device has been found. This device is the Remote Serial Port.
  16. Click Next.
  17. Follow the same instructions used to install the previous Multifunction drivers.
  18. If there are additional unknown devices to install, continue; if not, reboot the system.

3.2 Installing the IBM eServer Active PCI (hot- plug) device driver
Complete the following steps:

  1. To install the IBM eServer Active PCI device driver, insert the CD-ROM or diskette that contains the IBM eServer Active PCI device driver into the CD-ROM or diskette drive. For information about downloading the IBM eServer Active PCI device driver, click IBM eServer Active PCI device driver.
  2. On the desktop, right-click the My Computer icon and select Manage.
  3. Click Device Manager. The IBM eServer Active PCI (hot-plug) device is detected automatically as an unknown device under other devices. Right-click one of the unknown devices and a pull-down menu appears.
  4. Select Properties. Look under Location and you should see “Microsoft ACPI – Compliant System”. If you do not see this message, click Cancel and right-click the next unknown device.

    NOTE: If the installation of the IBM eServer Active PCI (hot- plug) device driver does not work with the initial unknown device selected, try the other unknown device.

  5. Click Update Driver and the Welcome to Upgrade Device driver Wizard window appears.
  6. Click Next. An Optional Search Location menu appears. Deselect all but the drive location of the driver.
  7. Click Next.
  8. When the System found a driver for device prompt appears, click Next to install the driver. The upgrade device driver window will come up prompting that the IBM Active PCI Device Driver has been installed.
  9. When you are prompted to restart the computer, select Yes if you do not have any more unknown devices to install; select No, if you still have an unknown device

3.3 Installing the Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet driver
Complete the following steps:

  1. To install the Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet driver, insert the CD-ROM or diskette that contains the Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet driver into the CD-ROM or diskette drive. For information on downloading the Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet driver, click Servers - File and device driver downloads to navigate to the document that contains the required driver.
  2. On the desktop, right-click the My Computer icon and select Manage.
  3. Click Device Manager. The Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet device is detected automatically as an unknown device under other devices. Right-click one of the unknown Ethernet devices and a pull-down menu appears.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Click Reinstall Driver and a Welcome to Upgrade Device driver Wizard window appears.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Select Search for a suitable driver for my device.
  8. Click Next. An Optional Search Location menu appears. Deselect all but the drive location of the driver.
  9. Click Next.
  10. When the System found a driver for device prompt appears, click Next to install the driver. You will now be prompted to restart the computer.
  11. Select Yes if you do not have any more unknown devices to install and No if you still have an unknown device.

3.4 IBM Alert Standard Format Update
Complete the following steps:

  1. To install the IBM Alert Standard Format Update file (ASF.inf), insert the CD-ROM or diskette that contains the IBM Alert Standard Format Update file into the CD-ROM or diskette drive. For information on downloading the IBM Alert Standard Format Update file, click IBM Alert Standard Format Update.
  2. On the desktop, right-click the My Computer icon and select Manage.
  3. Click Device Manager.
  4. Right-click one of the unknown devices and a pull-down menu appears.
  5. Select Properties. Look under Location and you should see: “Microsoft ACPI – Compliant System”. If you do not find this message, click Cancel and right-click the next unknown device.

    NOTE: If the installation of the IBM Alert Standard Format Update file does not work with the initial unknown device that you have selected, try the other unknown device.

  6. Click Update Driver and the Welcome to Upgrade Device driver Wizard window appears.
  7. Click Next. An Optional Search Location menu is displayed. Deselect all but the drive location of the driver.
  8. Click Next.
  9. When the "System found a driver for device" prompt appears, click Next to install the driver. You will now be prompted to restart the computer.
  10. Select Yes if you do not have any more unknown devices to install and No if you still have an unknown device.

3.5 Updating ATI Rage XL PCI Video Driver
Complete the following steps:

  1. To update the ATI Rage XL PCI Video driver, insert the CD-ROM or diskette that contains the ATI Rage XL PCI Video driver into the CD-ROM or diskette drive. For information on downloading the ATI Rage XL PCI Video driver, click Servers - File and device driver downloads and navigate to the required driver.
  2. On the desktop, right-click the My Computer icon and select Manage.
  3. Expand the Display Adapters field and right-click ATI Technologies Inc. RAGE XL PCI and a pull-down menu appears.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Click Reinstall Driver and a Welcome to Upgrade Device driver Wizard window appears.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Select Search for a suitable driver for my device.
  8. Click Next. An Optional Search Location menu appears. Deselect all but the drive location of the driver.
  9. Click Next.
  10. When the "System found a driver for device" prompt appears, click Next to install the driver. You will now be prompted to restart the computer.
  11. Select Yes if you do not have any more unknown devices to install and No if you still have an unknown device.

4.0 Appendix

4.1 Installations involving ServeRAID
The installation instructions for installing the ServeRAID controller card as the primarycontroller are listed below. Installations involving 4Mx/4Lx will require that the ServeRAID drivers be available on floppy disk during installation. ServeRAID 4H has drivers on the Windows CD.

NOTE: You should set configurations for the IBM ServeRAID card before you install Windows 2000.

4.2 Installing IBM ServeRAID 4Lx/4Mx/4H device drivers
Complete the following steps:

  1. Insert the ServeRAID CD into the CD-ROM drive immediately after the system has restarted.
  2. Shortly after you insert the ServeRAID CD, an IBM ServeRAID window appears followed by a window that displays the current BIOS and firmware levels installed on your ServeRAID card. If they need to be updated, then click Update; if not, skip to step 4.
  3. When the system has completed updating its files, you will be prompted to restart the system. Keep the ServeRAID CD in the CD-ROM drive and restart the system. The system will restart from the IBM ServeRAID CD; however, this time, ServeRAID utilitieswill start and will be used to create and initialize the ServeRAID logical disks.

    NOTE: You must create and initialize the ServeRAID disks for the boot partition to be visible to Windows 2000. Click here for more information on initializing and creating partitions.

  4. After you have created and initialized the ServeRAID disks, remove the ServeRAID CD and insert the Windows 2000 CD-ROM. Restart the system and continue with step 2 under section 2.0 Installation instructions.
  5. After Windows is installed, confirm that The ServeRAID Driver on the system have a digital signature. To insure that a digitally signed driver is installed, click here to download the latest IBM ServeRAID digitally signed device driver.

    Warning: Drivers that are not digitally signed will be overwritten by the installation of the Windows 2000 service pack. If these drivers are overwritten, an unusable configuration could result. Be sure to use the digitally signed drivers.

4.3 Updating ServeRAID 4Lx/4Mx/4H drivers
Complete the following steps:

  1. Insure that you have the latest digitally signed ServeRAID device driver. Click here to download the latest IBM ServeRAID digitally signed device driver.
  2. After you download the ServeRAID driver from the Web, update the ServeRAID driver on the system. Insert the diskette that contains the IBM ServeRAID driver into the diskette drive.
  3. From the Desktop, right-click My Computer and select Manage to display the Computer Management window.
  4. From the Computer Management window, click Device Manager. A list of devices installed on the system appears. From this list, double-click SCSI and RAID controllers to expand.
  5. Double-click IBM ServeRAID Adapter to display the properties window for the IBM ServeRAID adapter.
  6. From the IBM ServeRAID properties window, click the Driver tab. The following list of details appears:
    1. Driver provider
    2. Driver date
    3. Driver version
    4. Provider of digital signature
    Please make a note of these details. You should later use the note to see whether the driver was updated and whether the updated driver has a digital signature.
  7. To start the upgrade device driver wizard, click the Update Driver button. The Welcome to the upgrade device driver wizard window appears.
  8. Click Next to continue. The Wizard should display the IBM ServeRAID adapter as its hardware device to upgrade.
  9. Select Search for a suitable driver for my device and click Next. The Wizard will prompt you for a search location.
  10. Insert the floppy disk that contains the driver, select the search location (location of driver), and click Next. The Wizard will now perform a search for the driver from the selected location. The Wizard will indicate that it has found a driver that is a closer match for the device (IBM ServeRAID Adapter) than the current driver.
  11. Click Next to install the updated driver.
  12. After the Wizard has completed installing the driver, click Finish.
  13. Double-click IBM ServeRAID Adapter. The IBM ServeRAID Adapter properties window appears. Click the latest IBM ServeRAID digitally signed device driver to compare most current version of the driver with the version displayed in your system and use the most current version.
  14. Restart the system after the driver update has been completed.

4.4 Installing ServeRAID Manager
Complete the following steps:

  1. Be sure that the IBM ServeRAID Manager is installed on the Windows 2000 Server to maximize the performance of the installed IBM ServeRAID adapter.
  2. From the Windows 2000 Server, insert the IBM ServeRAID CD into the CD-ROM drive. A Welcome window displays the warning message “Exit all windows programs before you run the setup program”.
  3. Exit all Windows programs and click Next. The Licensing Agreement window appears.
  4. After you read the license agreement, click Yes to continue.
  5. Select the operating system you will use on the server, if you run Windows NT or Windows 2000.
  6. Click Next to continue. The option to install the ServeRAID Manager Agent appears.
  7. Select Yes, install service and click Next to continue.
  8. Click Next again to install ServeRAID Manager.
  9. From this window, you must choose the location to which you will install ServeRAID. ServeRAID is defaulted to be set up in the c:\Program Files\Raidman directory. If this directory is your desired location, click Next and setup will install ServeRAID Manager.

4.5 Installing Service Pack
After you complete the Windows 2000 installation process, be sure to install the latest operating system service pack. Click Microsoft Operating Systems (OS) Service Pack to download the latest operating system service pack. Review the accompanying instructions and warnings to install the operating system service pack.

Warning: Before you install the Windows Service Pack, make sure that the driver for the ServeRAID device is digitally signed. A non-digitally signed driver will be overwritten by the installation of a Windows 2000 service pack. ServeRAID will not function if this happens.   1. Change to the directory in which the Service Pack files reside (hard disk or CD).
  2. Run Setup.
  3. Click Agree to accept the licensing agreement.
  4. Click Install.
  5. After the installation process is complete, restart the system.

4.7 Known Issues

Warning: Before you install the Windows Service Pack, make sure that the driver for the ServeRAID device is digitally signed. A non-digitally signed driver will be overwritten by the installation of a Windows 2000 service pack. ServeRAID will not function if this happens.
