To complete the following steps, you will need the customer number and either the order number or the system number. All of this information is on the packing list or in the e-mail that you received for the software order.
Note: Write or print the location of your downloaded files and the file name. This information is required at a later time.
Check your authorization (One time only)
To ensure that you are authorized to the customer number, follow these steps.
- Go to Entitled Software Support and click Sign in.
- Enter your IBM ID and password. Click Submit.
- View my authorizations.
- If the customer number is in the pulldown, you are finished with this step. Proceed with Prepare to download the optical images.
- If the customer number for this order is not in the pulldown, there are two possible causes.
- You do not have authorization to access the customer number.
- Request access from the primary contact or an administrator for the customer number.
- If you are uncertain who the primary contact or administrator is, call the customer support center contact for your country, territory, or unit. The support center will notify the primary contact and administrators that you are requesting authorization to the customer number. You will not be able to download the optical images until the primary contact or administrator has authorized you to do so.
- The customer number has not been registered.
- Register the IBM customer number.
- Enter the customer number.
- Enter either the machine type/serial number or the system number.
- Click Submit.
- You do not have authorization to access the customer number.
After ensuring that you are authorized to the customer number, continue with Prepare to download the optical images.
Prepare to download the optical images
For the IBM i family, the preferred method is to use image catalogs and download the images to the integrated file system. Refer to the following information on IBM i for help with image catalogs or mapping drives.
- Refer to the preparing to upgrade or replace software using an image catalog document for information on how to use the image catalog.
- Refer to the getting started documentation for information on how to use IBM i NetServer.
- Refer to the port numbers for host servers and server mapper documentation for information on proxy settings.
- Refer to Mapping a Drive to iSeries NetServer for information on mapping a drive.
An alternative method to the above is to burn the electronic images.
The remaining instructions apply to either method.

Select a download method. Options include Download Director or HTTP.
Download Director
Download Director provides high-speed downloads, checkpoint/restart, and enhanced data integrity checking.
There are several benefits to using the Download Director.
- You can download all of the selected products with one click. You do not have to click and download each file individually.
- Downloads are faster because the files are packed (that is, "zipped").
- You can choose to have Download Director automatically unpack (that is, "unzip") the files. This is recommended to ensure that the packed images will be unpacked correctly.
- If you plan to transmit the files within your own network, you can leave the files packed.
- Downloads are faster because multiple connections are used.
- You can pause and resume downloads at any time without retransmitting the bytes that were already downloaded.
Requirements for using Download Director
- Download Director requires a trusted applet supplied by IBM. The applet appears in a pop-up window.
- In order for the applet to work, you must have the Java Plug-in installed. See Download Director - Frequently Asked Questions for instructions on how to download and install the correct Java Runtime Environment (JRE).
- You must also accept the trusted applet when prompted for permission to run on your computer.
Click Download now to start the Download Director. An applet will start and guide you through the process of downloading the images.
The first time that you use Download Director, you can set the following preferences.
- Whether to prompt for the download location each time
- Default location for downloads
- Preferences for unpacking (unzip)
- Proxy settings
To ensure that you will be prompted for your preferences, search the drive on your PC for a file named dlmgr.pro. If you delete the file, you will be prompted for your preferences the next time that you use Download Director.
Note: You may change your preferences at any time by clicking on "Setup" in the pop-up window.
The pop-up window also provides a way for you to test your connection to the IBM server.
After the download begins, you can monitor the progress of the download and see additional details such as the size of the file, the location of the file, and whether the download is complete or in progress.
Note: Download times may be shorter during off-peak hours.
HTTP
HTTP provides basic support for downloading images with slower download speeds than Download Director.
To use HTTP, click on Click here to use HTTP. You will go to "HTTP download".
In "HTTP download", click on each individual file to download the image. Multiple file downloads can be run at the same time.
