IBM i platform management

Hardware Management Console (HMC)

The Hardware Management Console (HMC) is an appliance that you can use to configure and control one or more managed systems. You can use the HMC to create and manage logical partitions and activate Capacity Upgrade on Demand. Using service applications, the HMC communicates with managed systems to detect, consolidate, and send information to service and support for analysis.

Virtual Partition Manager (VPM)

IBM Navigator for i provides graphical interfaces for Virtual Partition Management functions for IBM i 7.1 and later releases. The Virtual Partition Manager (VPM) introduces the capability to create and manage partitions without the use of the HMC. It supports the needs of small and medium customers that want to manage a few Linux or IBM i partitions.

For additional information, refer to the Redpaper "Creating IBM i Client Partitions Using Virtual Partition Manager"

Other aspects to consider

Security

Learn the language of security and how to set up and plan the security for your system. Learn how to secure your network and communications applications, and how to add cryptographic processing capability to your system. Find information about object signing and signature validation, identity mapping, and solutions to internet security risks.

Availability

Availability is the measure of how often your data and applications are ready for you to access them when you need them. In today's fast-paced internet economy, availability is a critical aspect of your computing environment. Decide what level of availability you need and the technologies and techniques you can use to achieve your availability goals.

High Availability

High availability is the ability for businesses to withstand outages, including scheduled downtime and site-wide disasters. Learn about determining your high-availability objectives and goals, understanding the different high-availability technologies that are supported on IBM i, and implementing a high-availability solution for your business.

IBM PowerHA SystemMirror for i

IBM PowerHA SystemMirror for i is the strategic IBM high availability solution for IBM i environments. It is based upon hardware replication, and includes technology solutions which fit every customer environment.  For release-specific information, see the IBM Documentation links listed above for High Availability. The following link contains marketing and technical information specific to the PowerHA product.

IBM Db2 Mirror for i

IBM® Db2® Mirror for i enables a continuous availability solution for data on IBM i. This solution allows for the availability of Db2 for i content across two independent LPARs to provide a solution to reduce or eliminate common downtime windows.

Managing fixes

Keep your IBM i operating system and other software current with fixes (or program temporary fixes, PTFs). Fixes play an important part in your system's maintenance strategy. Your maintenance strategy can reduce system downtime, add functionality, and provide optimal availability.

For more information on planning your maintenance strategy, see Planning: Maintenance.

The Administration Runtime Expert support (5733-ARE) provides an automated way to compare PTF from one IBM i system to ALL the systems in your ecosystem. Easily push PTF from an image catalog to any system and automatically load and apply.

For more details on ARE go to: Administration Runtime Expert

Ansible is an additional tool that can be leveraged for automation of PTFs and other aspects of the IBM i operating system. For more details on how to leverage Ansible for your IBM i see the Ansible for IBM i home page.
