Information on DNS Server support
Content
You are in: IBM i Technology Updates > Navigator for i > Documentation on Functional Areas > DNS Server Support
IBM Navigator for i contains the ability to configure and view DNS servers.
Under the Network tab, click Servers, then DNS Servers:

Any servers that are configured will appear in the table.

From the actions menu, you can Start, Stop, and Reload the server. Clicking Reload will run the CL command RUNRNDCCMD RNDCCMD('reload').
You can configure an existing DNS server by clicking Configure in the action menu. The DNS Configuration Editor will display.

The editor will display the named.conf and 0.0.127.in-addr.apra.db files by default. Note that these files cannot be deleted. The editor will also display the associated .db files for any forward and reverse zones that have been configured. You can manually edit the named.conf and .db files to change the configuration of the DNS server. Clicking Reset will undo any changes you have made since the last save.
From the configuration editor, you can add new forward and reverse zones. When you click Add Forward Zone, a new tab appears and prompts you to enter the name of the zone.

Once you enter the zone name and click Save, the contents of the zone file will be updated. You can make any changes and update the address of the server here.

Similarly, when you click Add Reverse Zone, a new tab appears and prompts you to enter the subnet for the reverse zone.

Note that the subnet address will automatically be reversed when you click save.

Click Save at the bottom of the dialog to save any changes to the configuration files and close the configuration editor.
You can also view the contents of the named.run file by clicking View Log in the action menu. If the server is not configured for logging, the file will be empty.

You can also view the associated server jobs by clicking Server Jobs in the action menu. Note that a DNS server must be running for server jobs to be active.
You can create a new DNS Server by clicking the Actions Menu and clicking New DNS Server. The New DNS Server dialog will be displayed.

Enter a name for the DNS server and its hostname and click Next.

The named.conf and 0.0.127.in-addr.apra.db files will be generated with default content. You can edit these files and add forward and reverse zones like in the configuration editor. Click Save to save the new DNS server.
