How To
Summary
The intended purpose of this document is to show you how to create a basic LAN Console configuration for a system that is already up and running.
Environment
If you need to create a Console configuration for a brand new, LAN Console Managed, system see the following links:
Also ensure that IBM i Access Client Solutions is installed on the PC in question. ACS is the only client that will allow a LAN Console connection to a V7R3 and later system.
Steps
Determining the LAN Console IP address and adapter used.
To start with, you need to know what the current IP address is set as for LAN Console. You also need to know what adapter is being used for LAN Console to ensure that you connected a cable to the appropriate port. If you already have this information, you can skip this portion.
From the Front Control Panel of the system:
- Put the system into Manual Mode:
- Arrow up to the number 02
- Push enter 2 times. You will see something like this: 02 B N<
- Note: The B could also be an A when coming up on A-side. If the N is already an M just hit enter 2 more times and skip to the next step.
- Arrow up to see 02 B M<
- Push enter button 2 more times to get back to 02
- Arrow up to 25. Hit enter and you see 25 00
- Arrow up to 26. Hit enter and you see 26 00
- Arrow up to 65 and hit enter. You see 65 00
- Arrow down to 21 and hit enter. You see 21 00
- Arrow down to 11 and hit enter. What you see here tells you the console type:
- A603500A= LAN Console
- A604500A= HMC Console
- If A603500A is shown hit the up arrow to display the number 12. Hit enter and you see 2 lines of characters. (Note: It's wise to either write down what you see quick or take a picture as this will eventually time out back to 01).
- If the last digit on the top line is a 0, then the first 8 octets of the bottom line are the IP address in hexadecimal format
- 03A0 0060 EAC0 0000
- 0A0A 0305 0000 0C10
- IP= 10.10.3.5
- If, the last digit on the top line is something else either call support or see the following document for more information
- If the last digit on the top line is a 0, then the first 8 octets of the bottom line are the IP address in hexadecimal format
Via Service Tools
- Start a 5250 session
- STRSST....login with a Service Tools ID that has sufficient privileges such as QSECOFR or an alternate Service Tools ID.
- V7R3 and earlier
- Option 8- Work with Service Tools user IDs and Devices
- Option 4- Configure Service Tools LAN adapter
- V7R4 and later
- Option 8- Work with Service Tools Server Security and Devices
- Option 3- Configure service tools server LAN adapter
- V7R3 and earlier

The information on this screen shows the current IP Configuration for the LAN adapter used by the console device. The Resource Name is the physical port identifier
Configuring ACS for a LAN Console connection.
- Go to main ACS GUI
- Go into System Configurations
- Click New in the lower left corner
- Give it a system name:

Note: This may be the actual system name or just one that helps you remember what it is for
- Click the Console tab:

- Under the portion for LAN Console/Virtual Control Panel, for the Service host name, put the new IP address of your console.
- Click Ok.
- Close out System Configurations and go back to the main menu
- Select your new system from the drop-down and click the option for 5250 console

- You will now be prompted for your Service Tools Credentials. The recommendation is to use QSECOFR or an alternate Service Tools ID that you created.

- For an initial connection, you are now prompted to accept the SSL Certificate being presented. Ensure to accept the certificate.
- Note: This certificate is hardcoded at V7R2 and earlier. Starting with V7R3 you can use the default certificate or assign your own in Digital Certificate Manager for the application IBM System Service.
- This brings you to the i5/OS sign-on where you can gain access to a 5250 console session.
