Abstract

MQM400 - WMQ LISTENER JOBS STARTED BEFORE QUEUE MANAGER START
ARE NOT TERMINATED WHEN QUEUE MANAGER IS QUIESCED

Error Description

A listener was started before the corresponding queue manager
was started. WRKMQMLSR panel did not show any active listeners
and ENDMQMLSR command failed to end the listener with the
message "No WebSphere MQ listeners for Queue Manager <qmname>".

Subsequently, when the queue manager was started, outcome of
the WRKMQMLSR and ENDMQMLSR remained the same. Even ENDMQM with
ENDCCTJOB(*YES) failed to end the listener jobs.

Problem Summary

A listener was started before the corresponding queue manager
was started. WRKMQMLSR panel did not show any active listeners
and ENDMQMLSR command failed to end the listener with the
message "No WebSphere MQ listeners for Queue Manager <qmname>".

Subsequently, when the queue manager was started, outcome of
the WRKMQMLSR and ENDMQMLSR remained the same. Even ENDMQM with

ENDCCTJOB(*YES) failed to end the listener jobs.

Users affected: Any users of WebSphere MQ launching listeners
while the corresponding queue managers are not running.

Platforms affected: iSeries, All Unix

When WMQ users use the ENDMQMLSR or WRKMQMLSR command, WMQ
determines if such a listener is running by checking for the
presence of a pipe file referring to that listener. This file
is written during creation of the listener. Due to a race
condition within the start of the listener, WMQ was
unfortunately deleting any pipes created as a consequence of
shared memory initialisation. As a result, when ENDMQMLSR or
WRKMQMLSR is executed, it finds no pipe files referring to this
listener and so deems that no listener is running.

Problem Conclusion

WMQ was modified to ensure that the queue managers persistent
shared memory subpool was initialised prior to creating the
pipe on which the listener would listen.
