APAR status
Closed as program error.
Error description
The WebSphere Application Server may issue an OutOfMemoryError error when decrypting a SOAP message. The customer is using Spring to decrypt the message. The message uses the SAAJ api provided by the WebSphere Web services runtime. The heapdump produced when the OutOfMemoryError occurs indicates that most of the memory is consumed by com.ibm.ws.webservices.engine.xmsoap.SOAPElement objects.

Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: IBM WebSphere Application Server users of * * SAAJ * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: An OutOfMemoryError error occurs due * * to excessive SOAPElement objects * * while using Spring. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: Install a fix pack containing this APAR * **************************************************************** The customer's use of the Spring framework has exposed a problem in the IBM implementation of SAAJ. SOAP with Attachments API for Java (SAAJ) defines several methods to add a SOAPElement as a child to an existing parent SOAPElement. If the new SOAPElement is already a child of the parent, the SAAJ implementation is required to remove the prior child. In some cases, the IBM implementation failed to remove the prior child from the tree. This failure to remove the prior child resulted in a SOAPElement containing a large number of child SOAPElements representing the same data. Eventually this causes an OutOfMemoryError to occur. This problem could occur with customers who do not use Spring.
Problem conclusion
The root of the problem is due to the IBM SAAJ runtime failure to remove a prior instance of a SOAPElement when a new SOAPElement is added. The algorithm to detect the prior instances of the same SOAPElement is improved. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix packs 6.1.0.37 and 7.0.0.15.
