Error description

  • You work with IBM SPSS Statistics 24 FixPack 1 and created a
simple bar chart for a scale variable with Mean value displayed
against the categories of an x-axis variable.

When you double click on the chart you select "Add reference
line to the y-axis". The reference line is displayed at the mean
    value.
However, on Properties dialog - Reference line tab you then
select Mean at the dropdown next to Set To button

You notice that with this option the reference line is set to
maximum value of the scale axis variable instead of being
    displayed at the mean.
This does NOT happen for each chart of this same style.
This was reported to IBM SPSS development.

Local fix

  • This is functioning as designed and not a defect. Since the
current calculation for Mean or Median only works for some kinds
of charts not all due to unavailability of original data,
Development will disable the control "Set to" group on Reference
line palette tab for those charts not being supported.
The "Set To" group should be enabled only when:
    1. Both of X axis and Y axis variable are continuous variable,
but y axis variable has no statistic specified
    2. Simple boxplot
Please note: When Reference line is added through menu action
item, the value of the line is just random value anyway.
