Error description

  • You are using the file -> Import Data -> .CSV wizard to read
    Shift-JIS data.
    If you:
    SET OLANG=English LOCALE=Japanese UNICODE=ON.
    Then the data always imports correctly.
    
    However, when you set the Output Langage to Japanese
    (OLANG=Japanese), the platform you are on, the UNICODE setting,
    and whether you read this codepage data as Local encoding or
    UTF-8  will cause the import to hang:
    
    On MS Windows:  SET OLANG=Japanese LOCALE=Japanese UNICODE=ON
    and read the data as UTF-8  results in a 'hang'
    On macOS: SET OLANG=Japanese LOCALE=Japanese UNICODE=OFF and
    read the data either as UTF-8 or Local encoding will cause a
    'hang'.
    
    To read Codepage Shift-JIS data consistently on all platforms
    and output languages:
    
    Set the Locale to Japanese
    Set UNICODE On
    Read the data as "Local Encoding"
    

Local fix

  • This issue has been reported to IBM SPSS Statistics Development.
    It is expected to be addressed in a future release or fixpack.
    Meanwhile, use the workaround as shown below..
    To read Codepage Shift-JIS data consistently on all platforms
    and output languages:
    
    Set the Locale to Japanese
    Set UNICODE On
    Read the data as "Local Encoding"
