Error description

  • Restore of an EFI based system can fail with ANS4021E errors,
    for example:
    ANS4021E Error processing
    '\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolume2\EFI\Microsoft\Boot': file
    system not ready
    Investigation shows that the volume the files need to be
    restored to is not available.
    Customer/L2 Diagnostics:
    Service trace of the restore attempt.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************

    * WinPE system state restores of Windows systems that have     *
    * UEFI-based firmware                                          *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:                                         *
    * System state restore ends prematurely if EFI system          *
    * partition files cannot be restored, preventing the           *
    * successful recovery of the machine.                          *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    * Apply fixing level when available. This problem is currently *
    * projected to be fixed in level 8.1.6.1 and 8.1.7. Note that  *
    * this is subject to change at the discretion of IBM.          *
    ****************************************************************
    

Problem conclusion

  • The problem has been fixed so that the restore operation
    continues if EFI system partition files cannot be restored.
    
    After the system state restore operation finishes, do these
    additional steps to restore the EFI system partition files:
    
    
    1. Mount the EFI partition with this command:
    
      MOUNTVOL x: /S
    
      where x: is an unused drive letter.
    
    2. Restore the EFI files the drive letter specified in step 1
    above:
    
      dsmc restore "{hostname\SystemState\NULL\System
    State\SystemState}\EFI\Microsoft\*" x:\EFI\ -subdir=yes
    -replace=no
    
      where hostname is the name of the system being restored.
    
    3. Unmount the EFI partition:
    
      MOUNTVOL x: /D
    
    4. Continue the system restore as usual.
