AIX licensing information

General Page

What are the AIX licensing limits on the number of CPUs or concurrent users?
IBM® AIX® operating system is licensed through a Software Maintenance Agreement (SWMA), which is typically associated with the serial number of a single IBM Power® Server. Currently there are no licensing limits on the number of CPU's or concurrent users for AIX.  When purchased, a new Power Server may come with a standard AIX SWMA contract entitled for a set period of time. Under SWMA, on a single Power Server you can have multiple AIX instances running on logical partitions(LPARs), this requires PowerVM® combined with Hardware Management Console (HMC) or PowerVC, each having their own respective SWMA contract; additionally, IBM i and Linux LPAR's may also be run on the same Power Server and have their own licensing and SWMA. Additional support offerings are available on top of SWMA that provide supplemental tools, services, SLAs, and other options that enhance the overall support experience.
IBM offers a range of support offerings. For information on AIX SWMA and other support offerings, including coverage, term, offering comparison, and pricing, please contact your IBM Seller or navigate to IBM Power Servers and click on the 'Book a meeting' button to schedule a meeting.
IBM AIX LPARs are also available through IBM Cloud with both Off-premises and On-premises options with with IBM Power Virtual Server (PowerVS).
NOTE:
AIX support does not have access to SWMA contract information. You can verify the status of your support contracts (asset entitlement) by contacting your IBM seller or by visiting the Entitled System Support site.
