Restoring previous release user data to a new system

Perform these steps on the new, target system to restore previous release user data to it. You will first install only the Licensed Internal Code and the IBM® i operating system from the I_Base distribution media for the target release. Do not install any of the base options or licensed programs at this time.

Note: If you ordered a new system with feature code 0205, refer to the Installing, upgrading, or deleting IBM i and related software topic, and then go to step 31.

Check off each item as you complete the task on the target system.

  1. If you use the Operations Console with local area network (LAN) connectivity, you might need to manually reset the service tools device ID password on the system to be the same as the IBM i device ID to connect to the Operations Console.
    After you begin the step, you must continue until you have performed the initial program load (IPL) from Save System (SAVSYS) media. Do not perform this as a preliminary step. If you are using Operations Console, you only have to reset the service tools device ID password on the system. The client attempts to sign on using the reset device ID password for Operations Console.
  2. If you are using Operations Console, LAN, or direct connect, disconnect from your system and close Operations Console. Restart Operations Console and reconnect by using the user ID of 11111111 and password of 11111111 to sign on to your system.
  3. IPL the system from the first distribution media.
    1. Mount the first distribution media on the alternate IPL device. Wait for the READY status.
    2. At the central processing unit (CPU) control panel, place the system in MANUAL mode.
    3. Press the Function Select switch (or buttons) to display 02 (IPL) in the Function display.
    4. Press Enter.
    5. Press the Function Select switch (or buttons) to display D (IPL from tape or DVD) in the Data display.
    6. Press Enter.
    7. If the system is powered down, press the power button on the system to power the system on.
      Skip to step 6. Otherwise, continue with step 3.h.
    8. If the system is powered on, press the Function Select switch (or buttons) to display 03 (continue the IPL) in the Function display.
    9. Press Enter.

    If you are using an Hardware Management Console (HMC) to perform an IPL of the system from alternate media, complete the steps in Task 3: Preparing to start the system from an alternate IPL device.

  4. You will see one of the following two displays. This shows the language on the distribution media.

  7. If a valid and functional load source disk unit was not detected on the partition, you are presented with the Select Load Source Device display. This display lets you select the disk unit which you want to become the load source. If you do not see the Select Load Source Device display, continue with step 9.

      Note: If you require more than ASP 1 configured, you can return to step 15 and create more ASPs by selecting 1 to create unencrypted ASPs. You can create multiple user ASPs at the same time by specifying ASP numbers 2 through 32 on the selected disk units. You cannot create encrypted ASPs or independent ASPs now.
    3. Press F12 to return to the Work with Disk Configuration display.
    4. If your system requires mirrored protection, continue to step 18.e. If your system does not require mirrored protection, press F3 until you return to the Dedicated Service Tools (DST) display, then select option 1 to exit the Dedicated Service Tools (DST).
    5. To start mirrored protection for your system, follow these instructions:
      1. On the Work with Disk Configuration display, select option 4 (Work with Mirrored Protection).
      2. On the Work with Mirrored Protection display, select option 2 (Start Mirrored Protection).
      3. Select an ASP by placing a 1 next to it. Press Enter to start mirrored protection.
      4. On the Confirm Continuation display, press Enter.
      5. On the Confirm Start Mirrored Protection display, press Enter.
      6. The Function Status display shows the completion status of the Start Mirrored Protection request.

    6. If you use the Operations Console, follow these instructions to switch from the current console, or to verify the console mode value:

      2. Sign on to DST using a service tools user profile that has security officer authority and the assigned password.
      3. On the Use Dedicated Service Tools (DST) display, select option 5 (Work with DST environment). Press Enter to continue.

  19. Load the first volume of installation media that contains IBM i. (This volume is labeled B_GROUPx_01, where 'x' is the language group.)

    When you are installing from optical media, wait until the In Use indicator goes out before you continue.

  31. Because you did not select automatic configuration, you must manually configure a tape drive to perform the following restore step for your user data and related system data.

    To configure tape units that are not models 34xx, use the following instructions:

    1. Use the Work with Hardware Resource (WRKHDWRSC) command to determine tape controller name: WRKHDWRSC TYPE(*STG)
    2. Locate the tape controller on the Work with Storage Resources display.
    3. Type a 9 (Work with resource) next to tape controller name and press the Enter key. If the tape controller is not listed on the display, you must select other resources, such as disk storage controllers. For some system models, tape units are now attached through combined-function IOPs. Look through the resources until you find the tape unit you want.
    4. Locate the resource name for the tape unit (in most cases it is TAP01).
    5. Enter a 5 (Work with Configuration Descriptions) in the Opt column next to the tape resource name and press the Enter key. You are shown the Work with Configuration Descriptions display.
    6. Type a 1 (Create) in the Opt field and a tape device description name (for example, TAP01) in the Description field. Press the Enter key. You are shown the Create Device Description (Tape) display.
    7. Change any values that you want to change, then press the Enter key (twice) to create the device description. You are shown the Work with Configuration Descriptions display again. The device that you created should appear on the display.
    8. Type an 8 (Work with configuration status) in front of the new device description. You are shown the Work with Configuration Status display.
    9. Type a 1 (Vary on or Make available) in front of the new device. If the status does not change to Varied On or Available, wait a few minutes. Then press F5 (Refresh). If the status still does not change to Varied On or Available, follow normal problem analysis for the device.
    10. Press F3 until you return to the main menu.

    7. Type the Restore Document Library Object (RSTDLO) command as follows:
      RSTDLO DLO(*ALL) DEV(media-device-name) SAVFLR(*ANY)
             ALWOBJDIF(*ALL) ENDOPT(*LEAVE)
      Note: If you have DLOs in any of your user ASPs, use the following command to restore DLOs to each user ASP: RSTDLO DLO(*ALL) ALWOBJDIF(*ALL) SAVASP(ASP-number) RSTASP(ASP-number)
    8. Type the Restore Object (RST) command as follows:
      RST DEV('/QSYS.LIB/media-device-name.DEVD') OBJ(('/*')
      ('/QSYS.LIB' *OMIT) ('/QDLS' *OMIT)) ALWOBJDIF(*ALL) OPTION(*NEW)
    9. To restore spooled files that you saved on your source system, follow these steps:
      1. In Saving spooled files topic, you saved spooled files to database files in a library. If that library has not yet been restored to your upgraded system, restore it now by using the RSTLIB command.
        Note: Use the RSTLIB command only if you used the Save Library (SAVLIB) command to save the objects. If you used the Save Object (SAVOBJ) command, you must use the Restore Object (RSTOBJ) command.
      2. For each spooled file that you need to restore, follow these steps:
        1. On the printout that you used when you saved the spooled files, locate the name of the printer file that was used to create the spooled file. It appears in the File column on the left side of the printout.
        2. To override the control character value for the QPRINTS file, type the following command: OVRPRTF FILE(QPRINTS) CTLCHAR(*FCFC)
        3. Copy the database file to the printer file by typing the following command: CPYF FROMFILE(LIBSPLF/SPOOLF1) TOFILE(QGPL/QPRINTS) MBROPT(*REPLACE)

          In this example, a spooled file named QPRINTS is placed on the output queue that is associated with the definition for the QPRINTS printer file.

        4. Delete the database file by using the Delete File (DLTF) command.
      3. After you restore all spooled files, delete the override for the QPRINTS file by typing the following: DLTOVR FILE(QPRINTS)
    10. It is suggested that you use the Start Object Conversion (STROBJCVN) command to convert user objects from the format used in the previous version, release, and modification level of an IBM-supported operating system to the format required for use in the current operating system.
      Note: It might take a long time to convert user objects. You can perform this step now or you can perform this step later.
  33. If you used the Retrieve System Information (RTVSYSINF) command on the source system, you must now run the Update System Information (UPDSYSINF) command to update the system information on the target system.

    If your source system does not support the RTVSYSINF command, use the printed system information to update all system information, such as system values and message reply lists entries, on the target system.

    The RTVSYSINF command does not update all system information. Use the printed system information to update system information such as access path recovery times, subsystem descriptions, and RJE configurations.

  34. Install the base options (including QGPL and QUSRSYS) and other licensed programs by using the distribution media for the target system (current release) and the GO LICPGM command.
    To ensure that your optical installation is varied on, begin with the Verifying completion of manual installation step. Do not continue with the Checklist: Completing the upgrade or replacement until instructed to do so.
  35. Run the Restore Authority (RSTAUT) command.
  36. If necessary, change the following system values back to their original values by using the Work with System Value (WRKSYSVAL) command:
    • QALWOBJRST
    • QIPLTYPE
    • QJOBMSGQFL
    • QJOBMSGQMX
    • QPFRADJ
    • QVFYOBJRST
  37. If you do not know the password for the restored QSECOFR profile, change the password before you sign off.
    Type the following command:
    CHGUSRPRF USRPRF(QSECOFR) PASSWORD(new-password)
  38. Type the command: DSPJOBLOG *PRINT.
    Check the job log to ensure that the job restored all objects. To verify whether the job restored all objects, spool the job log for printing along with any remaining spooled job output. Check for any error messages. Correct the errors and restore those objects from media. If you are using this checklist as part of a data migration, return to the Completing the migration topic.
  39. Complete the installation.
    Follow the instructions in Checklist: Completing the IBM i installation When you install the cumulative program temporary fix (PTF) package, accept the default option to perform an IPL of the system.
  40. Add job scheduler entries with the Add Job Schedule Entry (ADDJOBSCDE) command by using the information that you printed from your source system.
    Use the Work with Job Schedule Entries (WRKJOBSCDE) command and select the print option.
  41. In step 32, library QUSRSYS was restored. If this library was saved from IBM i 7.2 or a later release, it includes the TCP/IP Configuration information at the time of the save of QUSRSYS. This TCP/IP configuration can be restored to the system now. Type the following command:
    UPDTCPINF LIB(QUSRSYS) TYPE(*ALL)
  42. If you installed an integrated server on your system and you saved with your network servers in a varied off setting, perform the following steps:
    1. Add the links for the network server descriptions.
      Type the following for each server description:
      ADDNWSSTGL NWSSTG(Storage_Name) NWSD(Server_Description)
    2. Vary on your network servers by typing WRKCFGSTS *NWS and selecting option 1 to vary on each network server.
