Subdirectory names

How subdirectories are used as names for IBM Spectrum Archive™ Library Edition.

An LTFS-formatted cartridge is accessible as a subdirectory under the root mount point of IBM Spectrum Archive LE. The volume serial number (VOLSER) for the cartridge is set to the subdirectory name. IBM Spectrum Archive LE reads the VOLSER on the bar code label through the tape library's bar code reader, and sets the VOLSER in the VOL1 record on tape, and its cartridge memory, during the format process. If a volume name is assigned when the cartridge is formatted, the subdirectory name is formatted VOLSER – volumename. For more information, see Volume serial numbers and names.
Note: The volume name can be set up to 255 characters. If the user sets a volume name near 255 characters, the total length of the VOLSER – volumename would exceed 255 characters. Due to the specification of the file system, any additional characters of the subdirectory name that exceed the 255 character limit are omitted. The length of the subdirectory name becomes 255 characters.

Possible names for a IBM Spectrum Archive LE subdirectory are summarized in Table 1.
