User-Printable Area

The user-printable area (UPA) is the area on the page that contains all user-generated data. If an attempt is made to print user-generated data outside the UPA, an exception condition occurs. Identification labels are placed outside of the UPA, but within the valid printable area of the form. Figure 2 shows a layout of where an identification label can be placed.

When guaranteed print labeling is enabled, an appropriate UPA must be defined by the system programmer for each paper size that can be used to print data with a particular identification label. Different UPAs can be defined for the same paper size when different identification labels are used.

Figure 2. Placing Identification Labels on the Physical Page. Identification labels should be placed outside the UPA but must be placed within the physical page boundaries.
This figure shows a physical page with identification labels placed at the top middle and the bottom middle of the page. The identification labels are placed outside the UPA, but within the physical page boundary.

For a template that you can use to lay out your pages and define the UPA, see Security Page Layout.
