This section describes how to administer servers and project areas in the Global Configuration Management application.

Administering ELM servers
After you install and start the IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management (ELM) solution, you can complete administrative tasks, such as managing users and configuring or troubleshooting the server.
Administering configurations
Before your team can use components and configurations (streams and baselines) in a Requirements Management (RM) or Quality Management (QM) project area, you must activate configuration management capabilities in these applications and complete several other administrative tasks. After you enable this capability, you cannot disable it.
Getting started with configuration management
Configuration management capabilities in the IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management (ELM) enable multi-stream development, artifact reuse, and linking to artifacts across project areas. For the Quality Management (QM) and Requirements Management (RM) applications, a Jazz® administrator must have an activation key. The administrator must activate this feature at the application level, and then enable individual QM and RM project areas. After you enable these capabilities for a project area, you cannot disable them.
Cross-project links to versioned artifacts after enabling configuration management
To see, create, or remove cross-project links to versioned artifacts in IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management (ELM), you must work in a global configuration so that the links can be resolved. If you still don't see the links that you expect, refresh your browser. There might be a delay while the link index is updating.
Workflow for using configurations in projects
Understand the workflow for using configurations to work in parallel versions of a product or system, and create hierarchical structures of configurations from IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management (ELM) applications to represent components of your product or system.

As a configuration lead or application administrator, you complete the tasks that are related to managing components and local configurations for your team. These tasks are common to the IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management (ELM) applications in which you enable configuration management.
Comparing and merging versions of artifacts
From the graphical view that shows the versions of an artifact, you can compare two versions, and merge changes among versions.
Viewing artifact versions in graphs
Show a graphical view of the versions of an artifact to understand and explore which configurations contain a version of it, who created each version, and when it was created. You can also see how changes among versions are merged across configurations.
Administering global configuration project areas
A project area is an area in the repository where information about one or more projects is stored. Administrators can create, configure, and manage global configuration project areas.
