Organizing your software and deployments

A category is a label used to organize and group software instances, portable software instances and deployments. You can define as many categories as you need to organize the software instances and deployments for your enterprise.

For example, you can categorize them by:
  • System or subsystem. For example, DB2®, CICS®, or z/OS®.
  • Software vendor. For example, SAS, CA, or BMC.
  • Software life cycle state. For example, install, test, development, or production.
  • Business function. For example, credit card, accounts receivable, or manufacturing.
  • Geographic location. For example, Buenos Aires, Poughkeepsie, or Mumbai.

Categorizing software instances, portable software instances and deployments can help streamline the authorization process and help you find related software instances and deployments.

The categories defined to z/OSMF are displayed on the Categories page. To display this page, click the Categories link provided on the Software Management page.

If the link is not provided, you are not authorized to add, modify, copy, or remove categories. This situation occurs when your installation is using categories to authorize users to groups of software instances, portable software instances and deployments and has given only administrators and trusted users authorization to manage categories.

For information about using categories to control user access to software instances, portable software instances and deployments and controlling who can manage categories, see the topic about creating access controls for the Software Management task in IBM z/OS Management Facility Configuration Guide.

The actions and interfaces that you can use to manage categories are described in the sections that follow.
