Installing your server

The Performance Management server and supporting components provide the infrastructure for monitoring with the Performance Management console. Install the Performance Management server as the first step in setting up your IBM® Performance Management environment.

The Performance Management server must be installed by a root user on a supported version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. See http://ibm.biz/spcr-pmserver.

After the Performance Management server is installed, you cannot change the permissions of the Performance Management files and directories. In addition, you cannot change the user or group owners of these files and directories.

If you downloaded the monitoring agent images, you can configure the images as part of the monitoring infrastructure installation process. If you intend to monitor with agents from your IBM Tivoli® Monitoring environment, you can also download the IBM Performance Management Hybrid Gateway image and configure the image as part of the installation process.

Setting HTTP or HTTPS communications
The default communications protocol between the Performance Management server and agents is HTTP. Before installing the server, you can use an environment variable to change the protocol to HTTPS for secure communications between the server and monitoring agents.
Connecting to a remote DB2 server
By default, the DB2® server is installed with the Performance Management server. If you are already running DB2 version 10.5 fix pack 5, fix pack 6, or fix pack 9 on an external system, you can choose to use this existing DB2 server for the databases that are required by the Performance Management server instead of installing the default DB2 server. If you plan to use version 10.5 fix pack 9, after you install the Performance Management server, apply interim fix 11 or later to the Performance Management server. Interim fixes for the Performance Management server version 8.1.3 are available to download from IBM Fix Central.
Installing multiple offerings
The IBM Performance Management offerings enable you to start with any offering and install another offering. Any existing configurations and customizations are kept intact. Back up all of the server components before you install a new offering.
Installing on a system using an external directory service
If the system where you plan to install the Performance Management server with a local DB2 server is using LDAP for user authentication, you must update itmuser and DB2 instance user passwords if they are configured in your directory service.
Creating DB2 users before you connect to a local DB2 server
If you plan to connect to a local DB2 server, you might want to create DB2 instance users before you install the Performance Management server to adhere to your organization's database server administration policies. You must assign the DB2 users to their primary groups when you create each user ID.
Downloading and installing the server
Before installing the monitoring agents and, optionally, the IBM Performance Management Hybrid Gateway, install the Performance Management server on a virtual machine or computer in your network that is running Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
Uninstalling the server
If you no longer want the Performance Management server on your system, you can uninstall it.
Running the prerequisite scanner manually
You can enter a command to run a prerequisite check at any time before you install the Performance Management server.
Bypassing the prerequisite scanner
When you install the Performance Management server, a prerequisite scan of your environment starts and takes a few moments to complete. If any requirements are missing, a message directs you to a log file with the reason for the failure. You can enter a command to bypass the prerequisite check.
Installing a remote MongoDB
MongoDB is a NoSQL open source database that is installed with the Performance Management server. The MongoDB stores data for the transaction tracking feature that is available with the IBM Application Performance Management offering, and threshold event data. You can install and configure the MongoDB on a remote system from the server.
