Installing the product offerings

Use IBM® Installation Manager to install WebSphere® Application Server traditional and associated software on supported operating systems.

Before you begin

  • Read the hardware and software requirements on the Supported hardware and software website.
  • Prepare for installation and learn about IBM Installation Manager.

Installation Manager is a single installation program that can use remote or local software repositories to install, modify, or update WebSphere Application Server products. Before you use Installation Manager, refer to the Installation Manager documentation for a description of the various options that you can specify when you install the Installation Manager.

In general, it is recommended that you install new copies of product offerings at new fix-pack levels rather than upgrading existing levels that are in use. By installing a new copy, you can apply corrective service to both the old and new levels if necessary. You can uninstall any older levels when you no longer need them.

  • [IBM i]You must have Java™ SE 8 64 bit (option 17 of the IBM Java SE) installed on your IBM i system before you install WebSphere Application Server. For more information, see IBM i prerequisites.

About this task

Depending on your operating system, you can install a product using the Installation Manager GUI, command line, response files, or console mode. Installation Manager performs the following actions:
  • Automatically checks prerequisites
  • Looks for a previous WebSphere Application Server installation to determine whether you can add features to the product binaries or to install a new set of product binaries
  • Installs the necessary product binaries
  • Install packages with console mode

[AIX Solaris HP-UX Linux Windows]You can use the launchpad to launch each installation procedure. For more information, see Using the launchpad to start installations.

If you run into problems when you install the product, see the troubleshooting information at Troubleshooting installation.

Procedure

  1. [AIX Solaris HP-UX Linux Windows][IBM i] Review the roadmap for installing the Network Deployment product as described in Roadmap: Installing the Network Deployment product.
  2. Plan your installation as described in Planning the product installation.
  3. [AIX Solaris HP-UX Linux Windows][IBM i] Prepare your operating platform for installation as described in Preparing the operating system for product installation.
  4. Install IBM Installation Manager if it is not already installed.

[AIX Solaris HP-UX Linux Windows][IBM i]For more information, see Installing Installation Manager.

  5. [AIX Solaris HP-UX Linux Windows][IBM i] Installing packages by using console mode.
  6. Access the product repositories that Installation Manager uses to install the product.
  7. Install the product and any optional components.

You can install the following product offerings:

    • Install WebSphere Application Server with the required Java SDK.

WebSphere Application Server is the traditional application server runtime environment.[AIX Solaris HP-UX Linux Windows][IBM i] For information about installing WebSphere Application Server, see WebSphere Application Server installation information.

For transitioning users: IBM SDK, Java Technology Edition, Version 8 is the Java SDK version for WebSphere Application Server Version 9.0. IBM SDK, Java Technology Edition is no longer embedded with any WebSphere Application Server offerings. The Java SDK is available as a separate offering that must be installed when you install the product.
    • [AIX Solaris HP-UX Linux Windows]Install Application Client for IBM WebSphere Application Server.

Application Client for IBM WebSphere Application Server provides resources and clients to aid development of client applications for use with WebSphere Application Server. For information about installing the Application Client, see Application Client installation information.

You do not need to install the Application Client for IBM WebSphere Application Server unless an application that you are deploying was designed to run as a client application.

    • [AIX Solaris HP-UX Linux Windows][IBM i]Install DMZ Secure Proxy Server for IBM WebSphere Application Server.

Use DMZ Secure Proxy Server for IBM WebSphere Application Server to install your proxy server in the demilitarized zone (DMZ) while reducing the security risk that might occur if you choose to install an application server in the DMZ to host a proxy server. For information about installing DMZ Secure Proxy Server, see DMZ Secure Proxy Server installation information (deprecated).

    • Install IBM HTTP Server for WebSphere Application Server.

IBM HTTP Server is a web server based on the Apache HTTP Server developed by the Apache Software Foundation (ASF). This product provides advanced web server capabilities and a consistent cross-platform build of the Apache HTTP Server.

After you install a WebSphere Application Server product, you can use the application server to serve applications over the Internet. It is not necessary to install the IBM HTTP Server or another web server.

The installation solution diagrams in Planning the product installation show the components that are present in different types of environments.

For more information about installing IBM HTTP Server, see [AIX Solaris HP-UX Linux Windows][IBM i]Installing IBM HTTP Server.

    • Install the Web Server Plug-ins for IBM WebSphere Application Server.

If you install the IBM HTTP Server or another web server, you must then install a binary module for the web server to enable it to communicate with WebSphere Application Server products. [AIX Solaris HP-UX Linux Windows][IBM i]For information about installing the Web Server Plug-ins, see Web Server Plug-ins installation information.

After you install a web server plug-in, you can use the Web Server Plug-ins Configuration Tool to create a new element in the application server configuration called a web server definition. You can then manage applications for the web server using the administrative console.

    • [AIX Solaris HP-UX Linux Windows]Install the WebSphere Customization Toolbox.

The WebSphere Customization Toolbox includes tools for customizing various parts of your WebSphere Application Server environment. For example, you can use the WebSphere Customization Toolbox graphical user interface (GUI) to launch the Web Server Plug-ins Configuration Tool to configure your web server plug-ins for any operating system on which the WebSphere Customization Toolbox can be installed.

For more information about the tools included in WebSphere Customization Toolbox, see WebSphere Customization Toolbox installation information.

    Restrictions:
    • If a Beta version of the product is installed, uninstall it before you install this version.
    • Important: If you move or extract a product repository, do not transfer the content of a repository in non-binary mode and do not convert any content on extraction.
    • The Installation Manager web interface, which is included in Installation Manager Version 1.8.0 and later, does not work with WebSphere Application Server Version 9.0 offerings.
    • [Windows]If a non-administrator installs WebSphere Application Server into the Program Files or Program Files (x86) directory with User Account Control (UAC) enabled, WebSphere Application Server will not function correctly. You must install the product into a different directory or disable UAC.
