Installing Installation Manager

Install IBM® Installation Manager, which you must use to install WebSphere® Application Server Version 9.0.

About this task

IBM Installation Manager Version 1.8.5 or later is required to install the product.

[IBM i]Newer versions of IBM i might require a version of Installation Manager that is later than V1.8.5.
  • [9.0.5.11 or later] On IBM i V7R5, IBM Installation Manager Version 1.9.2 or later is required to install the product.
  • On IBM i V7R4, IBM Installation Manager Version 1.8.9.4 or later is required to install the product.
[IBM i]Note: This task applies to the Installation Manager GUI, which is not available for IBM i. For information about Installation Manager on IBM i, see Installing Installation Manager on IBM i in the Installation Manager documentation. See Installing as an administrator, nonadministrator, or group for the default locations for Installation Manager files on IBM i systems.

Procedure

  1. Download Installation Manager.

You can download the most current version of Installation Manager from the Installation Manager and Packaging Utility download documents.

The Installation Manager installation files are also available on the Passport Advantage® site and the product media.

  2. Change to the location containing the Installation Manager installation files, and run one of the following commands.
    • Administrative installation:
      • [Windows]install.exe
      • [Linux][AIX][HP-UX][Solaris]./install
    • Non-administrative installation:
      • [Windows]userinst.exe
      • [Linux][AIX][HP-UX][Solaris]./userinst
    • Group-mode installation:[Linux][AIX][HP-UX][Solaris]
      ./groupinst
      Notes on group mode:
      • [Windows][IBM i]Group mode is not available on Windows or IBM i operating systems.
      • Group mode allows multiple users to use a single instance of IBM Installation Manager to manage software packages.

This does not mean that two people can use the single instance of IBM Installation Manager at the same time.

      • If you do not install Installation Manager using group mode, you will not be able to use group mode to manage any of the products that you install later using this Installation Manager.
      • Verify that all products that you want to manage support group mode. All WebSphere Application Server offerings support group mode.
      • Make sure that you change the installation location from the default location in the current user's home directory to a location that is accessible by all users in the group.
      • Set up your groups, permissions, and environment variables as described in the Group mode road maps in the IBM Installation Manager documentation before installing in group mode.

The installer opens an Install Packages window.

  3. Make sure that the Installation Manager package is selected, and click Next.
  4. Accept the terms in the license agreements, and click Next.

The program creates the directory for your installation.

  5. Click Next.
  6. Review the summary information, and click Install.
    • If the installation is successful, the program displays a message indicating that installation is successful.
    • If the installation is not successful, click View Log File to troubleshoot the problem.
