Installing Rational Agent Controller by using Installation Manager

Follow these steps to use IBM® Installation Manager to install Rational® Agent Controller on Windows, Linux, AIX®, Solaris SPARC, Solaris x86, or Linux s390 operating systems.

Before you begin

Before installing, ensure that your computer meets the requirements.

To enable Installation Manager to search for the latest available version of the software that you are installing, ensure that you are connected to the Internet.

Note: You cannot update Rational Agent Controller version 8.3.x or earlier to the later versions. If you have version 8.3.x or earlier installed, uninstall it and then install the latest version.
Note: An error might occur during installation if object files of Agent Controller are loaded by running processes. To ensure the object files can be modified, do the following:
  1. Close your Eclipse workbench.
  2. Stop all java.exe processes that contain either Java™ Profiling Agent or J2EE Request Profiler.

About this task

In this topic, it is assumed that you either downloaded the installation files from IBM Passport Advantage® or you have the physical installation media. You might also access the installation files for Rational Agent Controller by following the steps in Scenarios for installing with the Installation Manager GUI.

Procedure

To install IBM Installation Manager and Rational Agent Controller from downloaded installation files:

  1. Change to the directory where you extracted the contents of the compressed files, and then changed to the RAC/disk1/InstallerImage_<platform> subdirectory, where <platform> is the platform for which that you downloaded the compressed files. For example:
    • For Microsoft Windows: <directory path for .zip file extracted contents>\RAC_Win\disk1\InstallerImage_win32_win32_x86.
    • For Linux: <directory path for .zip file extracted contents>/RAC_Linux/disk1/InstallerImage_linux_gtk_x86.
    • For AIX: <directory path for .zip file extracted contents>/RAC_AIX/disk1/InstallerImage_aix_motif_ppc.
    • For Solaris SPARC: <directory path for .zip file extracted contents>/RAC_SolarisSPARC/disk1/InstallerImage_solaris_gtk_sparc_gtk_sparc.
    • For Solaris x86: <directory path for .zip file extracted contents>/RAC_Solarisx86/disk1/InstallerImage_solaris_gtk_x86.
    • For Linux s390: <directory path for .zip file extracted contents>/RAC_Linuxs390/disk1/InstallerImage_linux_gtk_x86_gtk_s390.
    If you are installing from the physical media, change to the InstallerImage_<platform> directory on the DVD.
  2. You can install the program either with or without administrator or root authority:
    • To install as administrator or root user, log in as administrator (or root) and run the program install.exe for Windows platforms or install for other platforms. IBM Installation Manager starts.
    • To install without administrator authority, run the program userinst.exe for Windows platforms or userinst for other platforms. IBM Installation Manager starts.
  3. On the Install Packages page, both IBM Installation Manager and IBM Rational Agent Controller Version 9.5 are selected for installation. (If you already have the required version of IBM Installation Manager installed on your computer, then only Agent Controller, version 9.5 is shown as selected.
  4. Click Check for Other Versions and Extensions. When the search completes, IBM Rational Agent Controller Version 9.5 is selected for installation. Click Next.
  5. On the Licenses page, read the license agreement. If you agree to the license terms, select I accept the terms in the license agreement and click Next.
  6. If you do not already have a version of IBM Installation Manager installed on your computer, then specify the following installation directories and then click Next:
    • In the Shared Resources Directory field, type the directory path for installing shared resources, or accept the default path. Ensure that you do not include any spaces in the directory path. The shared resources directory contains resources that can be shared by one or more package groups.
      Note: Use your disk with the most available space for to help ensure adequate space for the shared resources of future packages. You cannot change the shared resources directory location unless you uninstall all packages.
    • In the Installation Manager Directory field, type the path for the directory where you want to install Installation Manager, or accept the default path.
  7. In the Installation Directory field, type the path for the directory where you want to install Agent Controller, or accept the default path directory and click Next.
  8. On the Features page, select either Install 32 bit RAC or Install 64 bit RAC and click Next. The bit level that you select must match the bit level of the WebSphere® Application Server.
    Tip: If your computer is not 64-bit, then only the 32-bit option is shown.
  9. On the Features page, choose either a typical installation or a custom installation.
    • If you want the default access and security settings, select Typical installation.
    • If you want to change the access and security settings, select Custom installation and then select your preferences for access and security:
      • Under Access List, the choices are:
        • This computer only allows only the local host to access Agent Controller.
        • Specific computers allows a specified list of clients to access Agent Controller. Use a comma-separated list of host names to specify which computers can access Agent Controller.
        • Any computer allows any client to access Agent Controller (Default selection).
      • Under Security, the choices are:
        • Disable: Communication is not encrypted and access controls are limited to the defined host list (Default selection).
        • Enable: Communication is encrypted and all connections are forced to authenticate for Secure Sockets Communications. You can type a comma-separated list of users that can connect to Agent Controller. These users are required to authenticate to use the tool.
        If you selected Any computer in Access List, then security is disabled by default.
        Note: If you are not installing as an administrator or root, then the Security option is not available.
  10. Click Next.
  11. Confirm your installation summary information and then click Install. The installation process starts.
  12. Confirm that the installation is successful and click Finish to close Installation Manager.
