Upgrading from old versions on Windows

Use this procedure if your License Metric Tool environment consists of components in versions that do not allow for upgrading straight to the latest application update of License Metric Tool. For example, if you use MS SQL Server 2008 R2 or the License Metric Tool server is installed on Windows Server 2008 R2.

Before you begin

  • Before you start the procedure, prepare the following information.
    • Version of the License Metric Tool server.
    • Version of the BigFix® server.
    • Version of the MS SQL Server database.
    • Version of Windows on which the License Metric Tool server is installed.
  • It is advisable to run the import of data in License Metric Tool after every upgrade of each component that you perform as part of this procedure: the operating system, the License Metric Tool server, the BigFix server, and the database.
  • This procedure describes the upgrade path for environments where the License Metric Tool server and BigFix server coexist on the same server machine and share MS SQL Server. If the License Metric Tool server and BigFix server are separated, then steps related to the BigFix are optional. However, if they are followed, then steps related to the operating system on which License Metric Tool server is installed need to be applied as well to the operating system on which BigFix server is installed and steps related to MS SQL Server need to be applied to both instances of MS SQL Server.

Procedure

  1. Back up the environment. For more information, see the following links:
Tip: It is advisable to back up the License Metric Tool server and the BigFix server before every upgrade of these components that you perform as part of this procedure.
  2. If the BigFix server is in version lower than 9.5 patch 17, upgrade it to the latest patch of version 9.5. Do not upgrade the BigFix server to version 10.0 nor 11.0.
    • If the BigFix server is in version lower than 9.2 patch 3, upgrade the server to the latest patch of version 9.2. Then, upgrade it to the latest patch of version 9.5.
    • If the BigFix server is in version between 9.2 patch 3 and 9.5 patch 16, upgrade the server to the latest patch of version 9.5.
For the list of available BigFix patches, see: BigFix Enterprise Suite Download Center. For instructions how to apply a patch, see the following links:
  3. If the License Metric Tool server is installed on Windows Server lower than 2012, upgrade the operating system to the latest Service Pack for Windows Server 2012. For more information, see: Overview of Windows Server upgrades.
  4. If you use MS SQL Server in version lower than 2014, upgrade the database to latest Service Pack for MS SQL Server 2014. For detailed instructions, see: Upgrading to MS SQL Server 2014.
  5. If the License Metric Tool server is in version lower than 9.2.27.0, upgrade it to version 9.2.32.0.
    • If the License Metric Tool server is in version 9.2.15.0 or lower, upgrade it to version 9.2.18.0. Then, upgrade it to version 9.2.24.0. Then, upgrade it to version 9.2.32.0.
    • If the License Metric Tool server is in version between 9.2.16.0 and 9.2.23.0, upgrade it to version 9.2.24.0. Then, upgrade it to version 9.2.32.0.
    • If the License Metric Tool server is in version between 9.2.24.0 and 9.2.26.0, upgrade it directly to version 9.2.32.0.
    1. Download the installer from the Fix Central.
    2. Extract the installer.
    3. Run the upgrade in interactive or silent mode.

        2. Edit the upgrade_response.txt file. Set the RSP_LICENSE_ACCEPTED parameter to true.
        3. To start the upgrade, run the following command: setup-server-windows-x86_64.bat -i silent -f response_file_path\upgrade_response.txt. For response_file_path, enter the absolute path to the response file. For example:
