Removing and replacing the 8231-E2B, 8231-E1C, 8231-E1D, 8231-E2C, 8231-E2D, or 8268-E1D signal cable of the control panel with the power off

Use this procedure to remove and replace the signal cable of the control panel on the server.

If your system is managed by the Hardware Management Console (HMC), use the HMC to remove and replace a signal cable of the control panel in the server. For information about using the HMC to remove a signal cable, see Removing a part using the Hardware Management Console and Exchanging a part by using the Hardware Management Console. If you do not have an HMC, complete the following procedure to remove and replace a signal cable.
Note: Check the display on your control panel to see if your system is managed by the HMC. If you do not see HMC displayed, your system has not ever been connected to the HMC. A display of HMC=0 indicates that your system does not currently have the HMC. If the HMC display equals a number greater than 0, your system has the HMC.

To replace a signal cable of the control panel, complete the following procedure:

  1. Perform the prerequisite tasks as described in Before you begin.
  2. Stop the system. For instructions, see Stopping a system or logical partition.
  3. Place the system into the service position. For instructions, see Placing a rack-mounted model into the service position.
  4. Remove the service access cover. For instructions, see Removing the service access cover from a rack-mounted model.
  5. Disconnect the power source from the system by unplugging the system, as described in Disconnecting the power cords.
Note: A second optional power supply is available with this system. Before continuing with this procedure, ensure that the power source to the system has been completely disconnected.

  6. Attach the wrist strap.
    Attention:
    • Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) from damaging your hardware.
    • When using a wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. A wrist strap is for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
    • If you do not have a wrist strap, just before removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
  7. Remove and replace the signal cable by using the following instructions:
    1. To remove the signal cable, perform the following step:
Important: When removing the cable, note where the connections are and how the cable is routed. You can use this information when you complete the replacement procedure.
      1. Disconnect the signal cable and its related USB cable, which are connected to the back of the control panel and then remove the control panel from the disk drive backplane. For instructions, see Removing the 8231-E2B, 8231-E1C, 8231-E1D, 8231-E2C, 8231-E2D, or 8268-E1D control panel with the power off.
      2. Disconnect the signal cable and its related USB cable from their two connected ports on the back of the backplane. Squeeze the connector latches at the end of the USB cable in order to remove the USB cable from its port.

      4. Remove the disk drive backplane. For instructions, see Disk drive backplanes.
    2. Install the replacement signal cable into the system by performing the following steps:
      1. Orient the cable as shown in the following figure, and route the cable through the front of the system. Ensure that the label is facing up and the USB cable is to the right of the ribbon cable.
      2. Route the signal cable through the front of the system as shown in the following figure. Ensure that the label is facing up and the USB cable is to the right of the signal cable.

  8. Connect the new signal cable to the control panel and replace the control panel with the power off. For instructions, see Replacing the 8231-E2B, 8231-E1C, 8231-E1D, 8231-E2C, 8231-E2D, or 8268-E1D control panel with the power off.
Note: When installing a new signal cable, you can replace the control panel while the disk drive backplane is still outside the system. After you have replaced the control panel, replace the disk drive backplane as instructed in Disk drive backplanes.
  9. Replace or close the service access cover and, if applicable, return the system to the operating position.
  10. Reconnect the power source to the system.
  11. Start the system or logical partition. For instructions, see Starting the system or logical partition.
  12. Verify the installed part or repair:
