Replacing the 8231-E2B, 8231-E1C, 8231-E1D, 8231-E2C, 8231-E2D, or 8268-E1D control panel with the power off

Use this procedure to replace the control panel on the server with the power off.

If your system is managed by the Hardware Management Console(HMC), use the HMC to replace a control panel. For instructions, see Exchanging a part by using the HMC. If you do not have an HMC, complete this procedure to replace a control panel.
Note: Check the display on your control panel to see if your system is managed by the HMC. If you do not see HMC displayed, your system has not ever been connected to the HMC. A display of HMC=0 indicates that your system does not currently have the HMC. If the HMC display equals a number greater than 0, your system has the HMC.

To replace the control panel with the power off, complete the following procedure:

  1. Perform the prerequisite tasks. For instructions, see Before you begin.
  2. Remove the control panel with power off. For instructions, see Removing the 8231-E2B, 8231-E1C, 8231-E1D, 8231-E2C, 8231-E2D, or 8268-E1D control panel with the power off.
  3. If necessary, remove the new control panel from its packaging.
  4. Connect the signal cable (A) and its related USB cable to the back of the control panel, as shown in the following figure.
  5. To replace the retainer arm, load the left side of the retainer arm in place before lowering its right side into position until you feel its locking tab (B) snap in place.
  6. Carefully slide the control panel into the control panel bay until you feel it snap in place.
Note: If the control panel does not lock in place, the media device cable might be in the path of the signal cable. You must move the media device cable out of the path of the signal cable before replacing the control panel.

  7. If you replaced the control panel as part of another procedure, return to that procedure now.
  8. Reconnect the power source to the system.
  9. Verify the installed part or repair:
  10. Start the system. For instructions, see Starting the system or logical partition.
Note: If a ball or dot appears in the middle of the control panel, toggle between function 02 and function 01 through Operations Console, the HMC, or the SDMC until the ball or dot disappears. Systems managed by the HMC or SDMC should use these consoles to perform control panel functions. If you are using the IBM® i operating system, see Control panel functions in the IBM i service functions topic for more information about the control panel.
