Removing and replacing the 8202-E4B, 8202-E4C, 8202-E4D, 8205-E6B, 8205-E6C, or 8205-E6D Slimline media device with the system power on by using AIX diagnostics

If you are running the AIX® operating system, use AIX diagnostics to remove and replace a media device with the power on.

Attention: If you are removing a media device to install a new or upgraded media device, see Installing the 8202-E4B, 8202-E4C, 8202-E4D, 8205-E6B, 8205-E6C, or 8205-E6D Slimline media device with the system power on by using AIX diagnostics. If you are removing a media device as part of a service procedure, use the following procedure.

To remove and replace a media device for the 8202-E4B, 8202-E4C, 8202-E4D, 8205-E6B, 8205-E6C, or 8205-E6D with the system or logical partition powered on, complete the following steps from the system or partition that controls the media device:

  1. Identify the system that you will be working on by using the identify the system process to turn on the system locate (blue) indicator. For instructions, see Control panel LEDs.
  2. Complete the prerequisite tasks. For instructions, see Before you begin.
  3. Stop the system, as described in Stopping a system or logical partition.
  4. If you are removing the media device as part of another procedure, continue to the next step. If you are removing the device because of a system failure, see Identifying a part.
    Attention: Follow these instructions exactly to avoid data loss or system damage.
  5. Remove the front cover:
  6. For a rack-mounted system, place the system into the service position, as described in Placing a rack-mounted model into the service position.
  7. Ensure that the media device is unmounted in the AIX system and if needed, remove the media from the device.
  8. Log in as root user or use celogin-.
  9. At the command line, type diag and press Enter.
  10. From the Function Selection menu, select Task Selection and press Enter.
  11. Select Hot Plug Task and press Enter.
  12. Select SCSI and SCSI RAID Hot Plug Manager and press Enter.
  13. Select Replace/Remove a Device Attached to an SCSI Hot Swap Enclosure Device and press Enter.
  14. Select the media device that needs to be removed. A window is displayed asking you to remove or replace the device.
  15. Perform the following steps to remove the Slimline media device as shown in the following figure:
    1. Pull the retaining latch (A) to the right and outward.
      Note: If you want to install a new Slimline media device, ensure that you retain the latch (A) for use with the new media device.
    2. Grasp the DVD drive (or filler) and slide it out of the enclosure.

    Attention: Media devices are fragile. Handle with care.
  16. If you are not replacing the drive, skip to step 16.
  17. Find the package that contains the new media device and remove it from the static-protective package.
    Attention:
    • Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) from damaging your hardware.
    • When using a wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. A wrist strap is for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
    • If you do not have a wrist strap, just prior to removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
  18. Align the replacement device with the media bay, and while holding the retaining latch (A), push the device fully into the system as shown in the following figure. Support the bottom of the device as you slide it fully into the system.

    The solid amber light turns off and the green lights turn on for both media slots when you have correctly installed the media device.
  19. Press Enter to allow the AIX operating system to accept the changes.
  20. Press F3 or Esc+3 to go back to the previous menu.
  21. Select Configure Added/Replaced Devices to configure the device in AIX operating system, and press Enter.
  22. Select List Hot Swap Enclosure Devices to confirm that the replaced media device has been listed.
  23. Press Esc+3 to go back to the previous menu or press Esc+0 to exit AIX diagnostics.
  24. Verify the installed part:
  25. Replace the front cover:
  26. Close the front rack door.
