Removing a SAS tape drive from the 8231-E2B, 8231-E1C, 8231-E1D, 8231-E2C, 8231-E2D, or 8268-E1D

Use this procedure to remove a serial-attached SCSI (SAS) media device.

1. Identify the system that you will be working on by using the identify the system process to turn on the system locate (blue) indicator. For more information, see Enabling enclosure indicators and Control panel LEDs.
2. Complete the prerequisite tasks. For instructions, see Before you begin.
3. Do one of the following steps, as applicable:
   1. If you are removing the media device for a system upgrade or as part of another procedure, continue to step 4.
   2. If you are removing the media because of a system failure, use the service action log to help identify the failing part. See Identifying a failing part.
4. Remove any media from the drive.
5. Stop the system. For instructions, see Stopping a system or logical partition.
6. Disconnect the power source from the system by unplugging the system. For instructions, see Disconnecting the power cords.
   Note: This system might be equipped with a second power supply. Before continuing with this procedure, ensure that the power source to the system has been completely disconnected.

7. If you want to replace the tape drive cable, then remove the service access cover. For instructions, see Removing the service access cover from a rack-mounted model.
8. Attach the wrist strap.
   Attention:

   • Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) from damaging your hardware.
   • When using a wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. A wrist strap is for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
   • If you do not have a wrist strap, just prior to removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
9. Press the release latch (A) and unseat the media device as shown.
   Note: If you want to install a new SAS media device or reinstall the filler, ensure that you retain the latch (A).

10. Pull the media device from the system.
11. Complete one of the following steps after you remove the media device:
    1. If you removed the media device as a part of another procedure, return to that procedure.
    2. If you removed the media device to replace it, see Installing a SAS media device in 8231-E2B, 8231-E1C, 8231-E1D, 8231-E2C, 8231-E2D, or 8268-E1D.
